The sprightly, brightly colored folk-art illustrations have a childlike quality, complementing the rhymes, which are divided into categories of lullabies, action rhymes, nature, and miscellaneous. These work well for baby or laptime story hours, as actions are clearly described.

Ages 1^-5. Faux-naive, vibrantly colored paintings dominate this attractive international collection of 32 nursery rhymes. Some of the verses are familiar ("Frere Jacques," "Ride a Cock Horse" ), but most are less well known. Although the absence of music is a drawback with the lullabies, parents and babies should enjoy the finger plays, complete with unobtrusive directions. Some ditties appear in both the original language (German, Yoruba) and English; unfortunately, rhythm is sometimes sacrificed in translation. The illustrations often evoke the native country, but Moxley has taken care to include urban settings, not just the rustic or picturesque. Recommended for large collections needing additional nursery treasuries or books with a global slant. Julie Corsaro

An interesting book to add to your children's shelf.

I bought this book to get a more worldly view of nursery rhymes. I wanted to read some of the rhymes that are told to children in other countries, and wanted to expose my future kids to other cultures.
The book does all of this with over 30 rhymes from various countries around the world. Some of the rhymes don't really rhyme as that was lost in translation, but it's still fun to see what is told to children in that country.
Each page is a colorful bonanza of illustrations to accompany the rhyme.
It's sure to keep your child's attention on the page as you read the rhymes.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to inject a bit of worldly culture into their child's reading time.

Love the connection to Geography

I teach in a Montessori school and am always looking for poems, rhymes, and good stories that help me incorporate geography in my lessons. Think the author made good selections and have enjoyed using them in my classroom. Children like poetry, the rhythm that it offers. Won't use all the rhymes, but will use many. I think it is a good choice for classroom and home libraries. Sometimes you like a book but not the illustrations and sometimes it is the reverse. I happen to think both were done well: well chosen rhymes and handsome illustrations that complement.
