From the Author
As a playwright and writer of fiction, this was my first non-fiction book, but it won't be my last. I enjoyed the research so much, I can't wait to do another book, probably about one of the SW pueblos, since I now live in New Mexico. I wrote this book while I lived in CT and I used to fly out to Billings, Montana, borrow my daughter's car and drive 60 miles to the Crow reservation.Windows open, hair flying, I found myself singing as I drove farther and farther East--away from the city--to the land of the Crow Nation. I loved meeting so many interesting people who helped me, on and off the reservation, and I can't wait to return to the Crow Fair, held every August. I was mesmorized by the entire Fair, especially the parade, the dancing and the rodeo.

History of the Crow Indian Nation

This booklet - appropriate for young and old - lays out the story of the Crow Indian Nation. This story of the Crow is the story of all American tribes. The Indians lived originally like Adam and Eve - in a paradise on Earth. Food was plentiful and easily obtainable. They basically followed the buffalo herds - their primary source for everything - food, clothing, tools and more. Friction with neighbors was minimal initially because space between tribes was great and their transportation - the horse - was limited. But then the white man arrived. First, white homesteaders wanted to live on indian lands, then railroad companies wanted to build across indian lands, then prospectors wanted to search for gold, silver and other precious metals on indian lands. Finally, the Indians were forced off their lands onto reservations where it was no longer possible for them to live like real Indians. In just 50 pages - with wonderful illustrations and photographs - the author has presented this sad story in beautifully simple language. This book is just great! Rolland Amos, Severn MD

The Crow Indians Come to Life

If there were such a thing as "coffee table books" for children, this book would be selected to be one of those. I found myself turning the pages with reverence and care, reading the material carefully but more so gazing at the beautiful pictures. The picture of the Chief seemed to almost jump off the page, and the other illustrations were as good as the photographs. A little-known tribe to those of us from the northeast, the Crow are a fascinating Native American group to study as they have maintained their heritage and customs despite a difficult life on the plains of Montana. As a retired teacher, I think fifth and sixth graders would benefit greatly from a study of comparative tribes and how they adapted their culture to the land, and how the land formed them. This book has a great deal of class. It is expensively produced with color and style, besides being well written and carefully researched. Any child would be proud to own it. Any teacher would be proud to have it in the classroom. Tarbescu has taken difficult material and presented it in such a way as to make it come alive for the reader. It is a gem.
