The Heist: How a gang stole $8,000,000 at Kennedy Airport and lived to regret it by Ernest Volkman and John Cummings. In the cold pre-dawn hours of December 11, 1978, seven men entered the Lufthansa Air Cargo terminal at New York's Kennedy Airport and escaped with $8,000,000 in cash, foreign currency, unmounted jewels, and pure gold. Nearly eight years later, despite strong efforts by the police and the FBI, not one cent or piece of the loot has ever been recovered, nor have any of the thieves been convicted. At least 13 people connected with the crime have been murdered or are missing and presumed dead. The Lufthansa robbery has become the stuff of legend: an unknown participant lives on a yacht off the coast of Florida; millions of dollars lie buried under a basement floor, guarded by snakes. But the reality is better, for it is the quintessential American true crime story, replete with the elements of thrilling drama: greed, betrayal, sex, murder, the underworld, a criminal mastermind, a contest between cops and robbers, a life-or-death struggle, a vast fortune, and the dazzling appeal of the perfect score. And now two first-rate investigative reporters have blown the lid off this irresistible story of America's greatest cash robbery with an account that is guaranteed to awe and amuse as it keeps you flipping the page.

From Publishers Weekly
The December 11, 1978, robbery of the Lufthansa cargo terminal at New York's Kennedy Airport was the most lucrative heist in U.S. history up to that time. Volkman, a former Newsday correspondent, and Cummings, a reporter for that Long Island newspaper, spent seven years searching out details of the complicated case. The principals included James Burke, a sinister bar owner with direct ties to the Mafia, many of his hangers-on and two Lufthansa employees who had conceived a plan for the crime but lacked the underworld contacts to carry it out. The robbery went off almost without a hitch, although the two airline workers were suspected from the start. As the skein unraveled, more gang members were identified, but Burke could not be arrested because he had all the underlingshis potential accuserskilled, the death toll finally reaching 13. The story is well told, although the authors sometimes employ a light tone that seems inappropriate tothe bloody story they tell.

From Library Journal
The Heist is a popularly written account of the 1978 Lufthansa Air Cargo holdup at Kennedy Airport, which netted three times more cash than the celebrated Brink's robbery nearly 30 years before. The authors profile the gang members believed to be responsibleRunyonesque hoods with monikers like James "Jimmy the Gent" Burke and Martin "Bug Eyes" Krugmanand relate in detail how the caper apparently came about and ultimately unraveled, a process that included a dozen or more unsolved murders. Reminiscent of Jimmy Breslin's novel The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight , this readable book will enhance any general crime collection. Kenneth F. Kister, Pinellas Park P.L., Fla.

a stupid stupid gang
By BbP
This gang got away with an 8 million dollar robbery
but it's hard to believe.
They were the stupidest people on the face of this planet.
The story is full of greed, drama, betrayal, sex, murder, the
mafia,cops,robbers,reporters, FBI, federal attorneys,
witness protection, drugs etc. This story HAS IT ALL.
This is an old book written in 1986. It is still interesting
to 2009 readers.
I loved it. Did any of them live to spend their money...read
it and see.

I am the man that made it happen
By shoeblack@aol.com
I read the book and of all the books that came out on the robbery, this one was the closest, I was asked to add to the book but at that time thought that it would not be my better interest. but now I ame the only won left alive and the only one indited and convicted. The money was never returned or the jewels. The goodfellows was the gang that commited the actual robbery, I was the one who set up the plans and the know how. things are not bad for me I make a good living and collect SS, i own a home and a van an 2 cars, I am now 67 yesrs old and this happen back on dec 11,1978. The FBI told me that they do not understand back in 1979-1980 why I was still alive when usually I would be the first one killed. No one else ever got arrested for this either. Because once I was arrested and convicted for master minding the robbery, they were dead in there tracks as I know none of them and anyone they took to trial, I would have to say I don't know him and I was cooperating with the Goverment. But now the Gov. wanted me dead so they could go to trial nd put me in lewisburg even after I started to cooperate, and put Paul Vario's Lt. next to me in Fla. but no one would do any thing to me maybe they knew what the Gov. wanted to happen, and we got along very good. Phil Rizztelo said to me in Lewisburg anything you just ask. well it goes on and on, but it was differant to my way of living.
Yours truly Louis Werner

I was the setup man, they followed my instuctions
By Lou Werner
except they were to have two vans and had to leave back close to 2 million in gems. I also am the only one left alive. Book is close to the truth, but does have a few errors, they called me to add to the book, said the Jimmy help, right, no way and I said I am still alive because of not talking about it.I did get into the witness program without testiefying on anyone. I talked to Jimmy in the MCC in nyc.I am planning on writing a book on what the Government did to me, setting me up to get killed, sending me to Lewisburg after I was cooperating. But I was protected by the bad guys. After 5 weeks there I went to the Warden and told him I was cooperating and he called the FBI who was behing sending me there, and said to me you are going back to NYC and don't ever let anyone send you here again and this went on and on four the next 4 years.
