Grade 9 Up-Brimner has taken personal accounts and woven them into his clearly written text that describes the Japanese-American internment during World War II. After a short background on the Asian presence on the West Coast, he covers what happened after Pearl Harbor, what life was like in first the assembly and then the relocation centers, Japanese-American contributions to the war effort, and the closing of the camps. Voices nicely complements Jeanne W. and James D. Houston's eloquent, far more detailed Farewell to Manzanar (Bantam, 1983) and gives additional information about people and events mentioned in Sheila Hamanaka's The Journey (Orchard, 1990). There is, however, some careless inattention to detail: the author describes children getting ready for school and adults for the workday on December 7, 1941, which fell on a Sunday. Two inserts contain good-quality, glossy, black-and-white photographs.

Gr. 7-12. The personal testimony of Japanese American survivors is woven into this history of their experience in California during World War II, when racist hysteria led to their forced evacuation and imprisonment. Brimner describes the roundups; the journey to "relocation" camps; the daily life in the camps; the bitter return after the war, often to homes and businesses that were gone; the enduring burden of shame that kept many survivors heartbroken and silent; and, finally, the campaign for redress and reparation. Without rhetoric, he documents the cruelty done here in the U.S. when individual rights were trampled in the name of national security. Unfortunately, the book design is dull; it would have been more readable if the many compelling black-and-white photos had been spaced throughout the text, instead of being all clumped together. The quotes from survivors are all meticulously and unobtrusively documented by chapter at the back, and it's these authentic voices that dramatize the physical and emotional imprisonment. Teens might read this with in-
dividual autobiographies, such as Houston's Farewell to Manzanar (1973), as well as with other accounts of racist oppression, then and now. Hazel Rochman
