Although there are better introductory guides to meditation available parents looking for a book to share with their teenaged kids would be well served starting with this one.

Great book, focuses mainly on Ancient Greece

Yet another great book written by Kevin Davis! I found this book to be a perfect opening to our homeschooling studies of Ancient Greece. The illustrations are colorful and high quality and the text is lively and interesting.
After showing a map of Greece, the book plunges into demonstrating that the Ancient Greeks invented formal education/schools and libraries, inventions such as the iron, catapult and large map of land and sea, and the first map of the stars. Other discoveries covered are architecture including inventing the first bridges, plays, the Olympics, the stadium, and the marathon. The democratic form of government and voting, and the creation of cities and states. Hippocrates' diagnostic method of medicine, the Hippocratic Oath, and the first diagram of human anatomy. The book winds up with some Greek foods and some common English words that have roots in Greek language. The book ends with a glossary of terms, a list of English words and the Greek translation, and a list of other educational resources.

a nice peek at Greek history and culture

My kids and I enjoyed Look What Came From Greece as well as other books in this series. I'm surprised to see the editorial review accusing the author of not providing enough information. It is clear to me that the book is intended to be an introductory glimpse into Greek history and society. It is after all, aimed at very young elementary students. Sure, it isn't Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea:Why Greeks Matter, but I don't believe Kevin Davis is trying to reach the Thomas Cahill audience. This book includes lovely bits on Greek architecture, entertainment, govenrnment, and more. I find the balance of drawings and photographs to be very visually pleasing. The back contains a glossary and a recipe for tzatziki (yogurt based)dip.

My husband's family is from Greece and this is a great way to familiarize the kids with the basics of what the Greeks gave Western society. It covers government, medicine, sports, language, foods etc. My kids (6 and almost 5) now want the one on Egypt and China!!! I enjoyed this too.

Fun book

I think all these books from the "You wouldn't want to be a...." line are great. The illustrations are great, the history seems accurate and even adults will enjoy them. While some of the info may be "harsh" it none the less is true, and shows how hard and unfair it was to survive back in those days (Wild West, Gladiator, Mayflower, Aztec Slave, Cleopatra, King Tut, etc.) We have almost all of them, and we like them all!

Marshal Dillon ain't gonna like this!

When I was growing up, towns on tv westerns were pestered by outlaws and Indians, but were otherwise clean and tidy. At the movies, most of the towns John Wayne visited appeared to have been recently dusted and vacuumed. And on the late show, the standard of cleanliness was set by Gene Autry's white hat. "You Wouldn't Want to Live in a Western Town" debunks this nostalgic image of the 19th century western town, but does so with genially macabre humor that will appeal to children and their parents.

Author Peter Hicks puts the reader into the role of Marshal Jim McGuire of Dustville, and with the help of David Antram's humorous illustrations, leads us through the trials of the Marshal's day-to-day life. These include stampedes, violent cowboys, betrayed and angry Native Americans, lynch mobs, and similarly fun real-life hazards of the 19th century American West. This may seem extreme and relentless, but it's all based on true accounts. And it's far from a complete list. Since this book is aimed at the young readers' market, there's no mention of a certain genre of female entertainment available in most cowtowns and mining camps, one which efficiently spread several diseases throughout the western territories.

Even though its denoument is grim, this book remains droll throughout. It is as much fun as a good western movie, even if its story is contrary to the popular Wild West show cliches so eagerly adopted by Hollywood.

A great book for those having a hard time with other bibles!

This book is perfect for those who have a hard time understanding the Bible! It seems like you have to learn a whole new language to read the Bible and this book puts it in todays terms which makes it soooo easy to read. I have had other knowledgeable Christians compare it to the Kings James version and they love this book! I absolutely recomend this book to anyone who is having a difficult time interpreting other Bibles. This book leaves nothing out, it just puts it in easier terms. Great for Christians of all ages and especially good for those just coming into Christianity, regardless of denomination. Enjoy and God Bless!

Much more readable and direct

This version is one of the most readable translations out there. It is not a corrected KJV or other version but an original as possible translation. That makes a big difference.

I spent an entire semester in college comparing the Old Testament text to as an original as possible Hebrew text and other language translations. Consistently the instructor, reading from a Hebrew Bible, found this translation to be the best for conveying meaning, well over any of the others 10+ versions/translations people used in the course. No, taking one paltry class does not make me a scholar and I know that. This is merely my experience.

The comparative quotes given by other reviewers shows how much easier the text in this translation conveys meaning in modern language structure. For instance:

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."

"God saved you through faith as an act of kindness. You had nothing to do with it. Being saved is a gift from God. It is not the result of anything you have done, so no one can boast."

No one writes or speaks like the first quote above. The "and that not of yourselves" would be marked down in a modern English course. "...lest anyone should boast" is not a modern language structure or words.

Is there a possible loss of `true' meaning? Possibly? But, as anyone who reads translations versus real material knows, there is -always- some loss of meaning in a translation. Languages change, die and shape over time and how the words were structured then can mean almost nothing to us now. Idiomatic expressions, materials in context with the times and language structures all loose something. An example: "Where goest thou?" is not correct English anymore. "Where are you going?" is. "...for they know not what they do." We now say "They don't know what they were doing/did". A English speaker learning Spanish knows that do's and don'ts are not used like they are in English. Yet people hold onto a dead language structure with a death grip.

I liked it. It conveyed meaning closer than what I've seen before and it's not just a rehash but a total rebuild.

Every one loves Dragon!

My 3 & 5 years old children loved dragon after reading this book ...we've been reading it again & again & they never said enough ...the adorable ,cute drawings really attract the kids & make them in love with that dragon ...the story is about a dragon who is sitting infront of the fireplace in a snowy weather ..he hears a "meow" sound outside ..he opens the door to find a cold fat cat.....fun events will follow when the dragon wants to take care of his new pet ...then like going to the beginning the cat is lost ...he looks for her ..he hears "meow" again & here comes the fun part ...the cat had babies ....wow ! you can't imagine how happy & excited the kids will be .....wonderful story ..Great from Pilkey ..
