Grade 4-8. A readable, descriptive, and informative look at the geological, biological, and environmental components and issues of the Arctic tundra. The text gives basic information about climate, land formations, plant and animal life, human habitation, and preservation questions, all presented in a straightforward and easily digestible format. Well-labeled, stunning full-color photographs (many by recognized Alaskan photographers) appear on every other page, but there are no maps or diagrams to help readers understand the scientific concepts or geological features of this environment. A unique component is the author's concept of the tundra as a teacher and the value of scientifically studying it and its worldwide environmental impact. However, while oil development in this area is an important issue, the photograph of workers attempting to clean up a beach after the Exxon Valdez oil spill is misleading since the beach environment is very different from the Arctic tundra. This title complements Jean Craighead George's One Day in the Alpine Tundra (Crowell, 1984) and April Sayre's Tundra (21st Century, 1994).
