PreS Grade 2 --In the hills, in March, it snowed and then rained four days and nights. Grandma said, "It'll come a tide." It did, washing away gardens, porches, pigs, and chickens. Four families on a hillside cope with the flood, driving to higher ground to wait it out, fetching their boat, and gathering stray family members. After the narrator's night at Grandma's, the rain stops and they all return to "make friends with a shovel." The story is lyrically told with sly humor, and expanded to hilarity by Gammell's rollicking, wet, full-of-action, full-color cartoons. The characters could get together with those he did for Rylant's The Relatives Came (Bradbury, 1985). The underlying colored-pencil technique is in his typical style, but for rain he uses watercolor. His work is jolly as always and brimming with life, but there is one small nit to pick: the chickens and the pigs smile as the water sweeps them away. The jovial art may also tend somewhat to counter the final lines of the book: ". . . I'll hold my breath/ and hope Grandma won't say,/ 'Children, it'll come a tide.' " That is quibbling, however. Children and adults alike will love this big-hearted book. Reassuringly, it shows feisty people coping with trouble and coming out all right, thus taking some of the fear out of a potentially terrifying experience. --Helen Gregory, Grosse Pointe Public Library, MI

Paint a picture

The words are carefully chosen to give a local flavor as well as tell a story. The artwork gives expression and character to the various participants in the story. For extra fun, look for this book read by Dixie Carter on an old Reading Rainbow episode. This book reminds me another favorite illustrated by Stepehen Gammell- The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant.

The Earle & Clarke Exposition

Adam Clarke was once considered a dunce, yet he learned twenty languages. He overcame his fears to become the most able biblical scholar of his time in the English-speaking world. When he died the Conference recorded in its minutes, "No man is any age of the church, was ever known for so long a period, to have attracted larger audiences." Three times Clarke was elected president of the British Conference of the Methodist Church.

Yet Clarke is known primarily for his commentary on the entire Bible. Before he began the commentary, he translated the whole Bible from the original languages. Unlike W. B. Godbey who dictated his random thoughts to a secretary, Clarke spent thirty years of hard work on his commentary.

Milton S. Terry wrote in 1885 that next to Matthew Henry, no commentary of similar scope and magnitude "has had a wider circulation or is better known than the commentary of Adam Clarke."

From the first edition which quickly sold out in 1810, his commentary has remain in print until the present. However, in 1967, Ralph Earle produced a one volume abridged edition. Earle stated that dated or extraneous material was eliminated and I would concede that the commentary does contain extraneous material. My concern is that Earle has omitted Clarke's teaching at one significant point while claiming to allow "the great scholar to speak for himself."

In the Preface Earle claims "the actual words of Adam Clarke have not been changed, except to modernize the language and to abbreviate where appropriate." Judge for yourself.

At Ezekiel 36:27 Earle omits one half of one page, including Clarke's comment that "true Christians are those who are filled with the nature and Spirit of Christ."

Jesus said in John 3:5, "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." Clarke wrote,

Reader, hast thou never had any other baptism than that of water? If thou hast not had any other, take Jesus Christ's word for it, thou canst not, in thy present state, enter into the kingdom of God. I would not say to thee merely, read what it is to be born of the Spirit: but pray, pray to God incessantly, till He give thee to feel what is implied in it! Remember, it is Jesus only who baptizes with the Holy Ghost. He who receives not this baptism has neither right nor title to the kingdom of God; nor can he with any propriety be termed a Christian, because that which essentially distinguished the Christian dispensation from that of the Jews was, that its author baptized all His followers with the Holy Ghost.

Where Jesus teaches His disciples that the Holy Spirit is with them and will be in them (John 14:17), Clarke explains:

It is certain the Holy Spirit was not yet given to the disciples so as to dwell in them; this St. John himself assures us, 7:39. And it is evidently of that Spirit and its influences, which was not given till the day of pentecost, that our Lord here speaks.

Ralph Earle has omitted this paragraph.

At Acts 2:28 Peter preached, "Repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Clarke points out:

In reference to the remission or removal of sins: baptism pointing out the purifying influences of the Holy Spirit; [and it is in reference to that purification that it is administered, and should in consideration never be separated from it. For baptism itself purifies not the conscience; it only points out the grace by which this is to be done. If ye faithfully use the sign, ye shall get the substance.]

Clarke is making a connection between Spirit baptism and water baptism (see also Clarke's Christian Theology, 255). Earle omits everything bracketed which does not allow this connection to be made.

Earle sees Acts 8:14-17 as an experience subsequent to conversion. He believes "unquestionably, the receiving of the Spirit was subsequent to conversion" [Beacon Bible Commentary, 7:353]. Clarke, however, said the gift of the Spirit was "certainly not for the sanctification of the souls of the people.... It was the miraculous gifts of the Spirit which were thus communicated."

Where Paul was filled with the Spirit in Acts 9:17, Clarke comments that prior to this point in time Paul "was not even a Christian; and the Holy Ghost, which he received now, was given more to make him a thorough Christian convert than to make him an apostle."

Earle omits this reference. However, Earle believes that "one is filled with the Holy Spirit when his heart is cleansed from all sin in the experience of entire sanctification" [Beacon, 7:305].

When Cornelius receives the Spirit and is then baptized in water, Clarke again makes the tie between Spirit baptism and water baptism (Acts 10:47).

These had evidently received the Holy Ghost, and consequently were become members of the mystical body of Christ; and yet St. Peter requires that they shall receive baptism by water, that they might become members of the Christian Church.

Clarke concludes by noting that the baptism of the Spirit did not supersede the baptism by water, "nor indeed can it."

Earle quotes the paragraph, but omits the concluding note. However, in Earle's own commentary on Acts, he states the experience of cornelius is "commonly known as entire sanctification" [Beacon, 7:380].

At Acts 11:16 Clarke observed that the promise of the Spirit's baptism was made to all "who should believe on Jesus Christ." Earle let this statement stand, but omitted Clarke's closing comment, "Hence we learn that the promise of the Holy Spirit is given to the whole body of Christians - to all that believe on Christ as dying for their sins, and rising for their justification."

Two verses later it is recorded that at the household of Cornelius God granted the Gentiles repentance unto life. Clarke says they embraced the Christian religion. Earle omits this reference.

At Acts 19 Earle does let stand Clarke's note that the Ephesian disciples "therefore were not Christians." Earle, however, omits the following paragraph:

And to this day the genuine disciples of Christ are distinguished from all false religionists, and from nominal Christians, by being made partakers of this Spirit, which enlightens their minds, and convinces of sin, righteousness, and judgment; quickens their souls, witnesses to their conscience that they are the children of God, and purifies their hearts. Those who have not received these blessings from the Holy Spirit, whatever their profession may be, know nothing better than John's baptism: good, excellent in its kind, but ineffectual to the salvation of those who live under the meridian of Christianity.

In Earle's own commentary he states that those who have believed and entered the Christian faith still need to be filled with the Spirit as a subsequent experience [Beacon, 7:477].

At Romans 8:9 Clarke can almost be heard preaching.

God made man in union with Himself, and his heart was His temple. Sin being committed, the temple was defiled, and God abandoned it. Jesus Christ is come by His sacrifice and Spirit to cleanse the temple, and make man again a habitation of God through the Spirit. And when this almighty Spirit again makes the heart His residence, then the soul is delivered from the moral effects of the fall. And that this is absolutely necessary to our present peace and final salvation is proved from this: that if any man have not the Spirit of Christ - the mind that was in him, produced there by the power of the Holy Ghost - he is none of His; he does not belong to the kingdom, flock, or family of God. This is an awful conclusion! Reader, lay it to heart.

Earle did not see fit to include anything cited above. At Ephesians 1:13 Clarke said:

The Holy Spirit, which is promised to them who believe on Christ Jesus, was given to you and thus you were ascertained to be the children of God, for God hasnot child who is not a partaker of the Holy Ghost, and he who has this Spirit has God's seal that he belongs to the heavenly family.

At 1 John 4:18 Clarke exhorts:

Let such earnestly seek, and fervently believe on the Son of God; and he will son give them another baptism of his Spirit, will purge out all the old leaven, and fill their whole souls with that love which is the fulfilling of the law.

This exhortation was omitted by Earle.

Ralph Earle said he found it "difficult to understand the almost universal neglect in the Christian Church of the baptism of the Holy Spirit" [The Gospel According to Mark, 30]. However, he omits most of Clarke's references to Spirit baptism. This is probably because Clarke did not connect Spirit baptism exclusively to entire sanctification.

Wesley Tracy concluded, "Clarke strongly emphasized the Holy Spirit in conversion." In entire sanctification the believer is baptized with a great effusion of the Spirit, but Clarke did not connect Pentecost and the experience of sanctification "in any direct way" [When Adam Clarke Preached, People Listened, 124]. However, Earle does in his commentary [Beacon, 7:274].

Who gave Ralph Earle the authority to edit out those passages which do not fit his theology and publish the results under Clarke's name? If the holiness movement teaches the same doctrine as early Methodism, why was so much editing necessary? How many people will think they are actually reading Clarke when they are only reading a sanitized version? Perhaps Clarke should have been abridged by someone who was more sympathetic to Clarke's theology.

Thomas Oden has raised his voice against "modern Chauvinists" which he defines as:

"those who have decided that there is precious little worth learning from any premodern voice. They assume the intrinsic inferiority of all premodern texts and the intrinsic superiority of all modern methods of investigation of those texts [Life in the Spirit, 469].

In the early history of our nation the Lewis & Clark Expedition paved the way for expansion. However, the Earle & Clarke Exposition leads to suppression of the truth.

Shame On This Abridgement!

As a student of the Bible for the past ten years, I've read some of the finest commentaries from the world's greatest scholars. One thing I noticed early on is that almost every writer quoted Dr.Adam Clarke and made reference to his Bible commentary. The information always quoted was to say the least, inspiring and insightful, so, I knew one day I would have to own Dr. Clarke's great commentary on the Bible. The unfortunate news of that the abridger, Ralph Earle, has removed extremely important information such as the correct order of chapters of the book of Jeremiah which is NOT the way it appears in our current Old Testament, and the 39 verses in 1 Samuel which are of doubtful authenticity and which didn't appear in the original text. I gave three stars to give praise to Dr. Clarke for being one of the world's greatest Biblical scholars, but not five stars because of the unacceptable, irresponsible job done by abridger, Ralph Earle. Perhaps we should all seek out hard-to-find copies of the original work, or purchase the unabriged version on CD-Rom. A word to the wise: stay away from abridgements! Biblical students are the loser here thanks to this abridgment.

Shame On This Abridgement!

As a student of the Bible for over a decade, I've read countless commentaries on the Old and New Testaments. Most of these great authors kept quoting Dr. Adam Clarke. The information always quoted from Dr. Clarke was to say the least awe-inspiring, so I knew I had to purchase this commentary one day. The unfortunate news is that the abridger Ralph Earle has removed extremely important information such as the correct order of chapters of Jeremiah (which are incorrect in our current Bibles), as well as the 39 verses in 1 Samuel which are of doubtful authenticity, and should not have been included in the Holy Bible account. The book get three stars because I wanted to give Dr. Adam Clarke his deserved praise, but not a five star rating because of the irresponsible job done by Ralph Earle. We should all seek out the original 3-book series, or if out-of-print, search for the unabridged version on CD-Rom.

Grade 4-6?Biographies of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra are numerous. These series titles don't add anything new to those bodies of work, but could be used as basic introductions to the subjects. On the other hand, there is little available to describe the reign of Herod the Great to young people. However, the political and religious wrangling of the time is nearly impossible to sort out and condense in any kind of understandable manner in so short a book. So many personalities, so many intrigues and conflicting loyalties, and so much bloodshed are described that it's almost impossible to keep them all straight. All three titles contain excellent full-color and black-and-white photos, illustrations, and reproductions; good indexes; and brief but useful lists for further reading. Alexander has only one map, a drawback in a book about conquest in an unfamiliar part of the world.?David N. Pauli, Missoula Public Library, MT

An unqualified scholar educating youth to half-truth?

On a fisrt look I was pleased with the book. It contains a good amount of information, it has nice photographs, it is concise and potentially interesting to the age-group it is addressing.
On the other hand, just because the book is targeting children its author has no excuse for NOT treating the subject with all the seriousness and thoroughness it deserves. All the more reason to investigate thoroughly and speak the truth, when one is feeding information to children.
Was Mr. Green's task to disaffectedly write a summary of another work? If not, did Mr. Green ever bother to read the historical sources on Alexander, or to acquire some depth in pre-Alexandrian Macedonian history? Doubtful! No reference is ever given to his sources (the end of the book might do nicely). The pinnacle of mediocricy comes with the claim that "Macedonians were not Greek but had adopted the Greek language and religion". Let it be of note that the insignificant phrase, proclaims th! e author's lack of understanding of his subject matter.
First and foremost, as many a child knows, Heracles is the father of the Doric tribe that represents a significant part of the Greek population and includes the Macedonians, Laecedemonians (Spartans), Cretans and several others. Alexander, through his father Philip, claims direct descent from Heracles and through his mother, Olympias, direct descent from the Achean Achilles. Now how much more Greek does it get than that? In addition, until Nero's days, only Greeks as defined by the three principles of "homaemon", "homoglosson" and "homothreskon" were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games and the Delphic Alliance; "homaemon" meaning of "the same blood" and taking precedence over the other two ("same language" and "same religion"). Needless to say that Macedonians were SINCE THE BEGINING (hundreds of years before Philip and Alexander) players in! both the Games and the Alliance.
Finally in Alexander's! own words, things are abundantly clear:
"Men of Athens... Had I not greatly AT HEART the common welfare of GREECE I should not have come to tell you; but I AM MYSELF GREEK by descent, and I would not willingly see Greece exchange freedom for slavery. ...If you prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run, out of zeal for the GREEK CAUSE, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by the barbarians. I am ALEXANDER of MACEDON.'" [ Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45, translated by G.Rawlinson] "(Persians,) Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the REST OF GREECE and did us much harm though we had done them no prior injury; I have been appointed commander-in-chief of the GREEKS and invaded Asia in the desire to take vengeance on Persia for your aggressions." [Arrian Anabasis 2. 14. 4.]
The Greek states were! rather small, neither so powerful nor as admired by surrounding civilizations for their system of government and free thinking. It was not until after Alexander's conquest and not before, that acquisition of the Greek language and customs became desirable by other ethnicities than the Greek one. Athenian demagogues might have considered Macedonians more barbaric than their "noble" selves, moved by elitist regionalism (not quite unknown to our own United States?) and Athenians' claims on themselves being "native" and "more" ancient and "more Greek" than not only the Macedonians but the remainder of the Doric states. Athenians also based their high-handed manners on the superiority of their (by then degenerate) democracy to the extensive monarchy established by Philip in the Macedon, a monarchy Athenians claimed more similar to the tyrannical Persian system than to their own. A claim unfair, since Philip or Alexander was the leader of fr! ee-willing men, faithful comrades that spoke their minds (e! ven at the price of death), rather than being the absolute master of servile courtesans of the eastern type .
In short, to say that Macedonians are not Greek is as ludicrous as to claim that Bostonians (or New Yorkers, or Californians, or Kentuckians) are not American.
All the more preposterous, the claim dishonors the dead man the book is about. Whether the dignity afforded to a dead subject of study is of concern to the author we may not know; such sensibilities are anyway dying in the global melting pot. It is doubtful that the author of this little book has in any way intended to offend. Mr. Green has more likely aspired to educate and has not altogether failed in demonstrating his capacity to do so in a pleasant manner. It shall be therefore fruitful, if in the future he applies himself to slightly better scholarship.
For educators (and authors qualify as such) should only be too painfully aware of the old Greek proverb: "imperfect education is worse than i! gnorance".

The above review is essentially a nationalist screed. The "Greekness" of the Macedonians is a topic of some debate, but, in any case, not central to the book. Make up your own minds and ignore the ideologues.

Human and canine both struggle to rouse themselves, eat breakfast from bowls, and have an intimate knowledge of their route. Pilkey paints their shared experiences with a graceful economy of language. Morning is the third character in the story?"...this is the time when they are the happiest." Deep, sumptuous acrylics portray the initial darkness, the gradual lightening, and the riotous magenta and orange sunrise. The artist has cleverly designed parallel, yet contrasting, opening and closing scenes of the African American child in bed, feet covered by his dog, room framed by a sloping roof. In the first spread, the still starry morning surrounds the house and "enters" it through the uncurtained window. When the duo return and crawl back into bed, the shade is pulled against the brilliance, the room darkened?a scene clinching their camaraderie. Riding his bike along the delivery route, the boy thinks about "Big Things. And small things. And sometimes he is thinking about nothing at all." Meanwhile, his dog travels the same route in his own way: "He knows which trees are for sniffing. He knows which birdbaths are for drinking, which squirrels are for chasing, and which cats are for growling at." Happy together before the rest of the world awakes, they finish the job and head back home to bed, where they dream of flying across the night sky. The story tells the details of a paperboy's morning in a matter-of-fact way, and young children will find those details fascinating: the wordless pages that show how the papers arrive at the boy's house; the paperboy snapping the green rubber bands around the rolled newspapers; and the empty red bag flapping behind the boy as he pedals home. The dual story of boy and dog adds dimension throughout and leads to a satisfying conclusion, but just as important is the sense of time passing within the story and the artwork. Using simplified shapes and muted colors shot with light, the acrylic paintings include beautifully composed landscapes and interiors, ending with a Chagall-like dream scene on the last page. Happy are they at work before dawn, the dog running after scents & growling at critters & the boy pedaling his bike, thinking his thoughts & tossing the morning paper to house after house, as slowly, softly another day dawns.
Dav Pilkey's pictures & story capture the shadows & colors of when night turns toward day & while everyone is tumbling out of their beds, the paperboy & his dog are tumbling back into theirs.
A fine way to introduce children to the idea of working for a living, of being responsible, of doing the work until it's done & the fun.

Deliverance

It's a bad sign when a book published in 1996 already conjures up feelings of nostalgia. Remember paperboys? How kids could earn a little extra money by getting that crack-of-dawn delivery job that put a few more coffers in their pockets? Nowadays, many paperboys have been replaced with adults. Adults with cars, no less. Looking back at Dav "Captain Underpants" Pilkey's Caldecott Honor title, "The Paperboy", the reader is transported to those ethereal moments that exist for some kids even today just before the sun rises. It's a story about a boy, his dog, his job, and that's about it. No grand statements or surprising moments. Just a lovely look at a once common suburban ideal.

On the title page we see a dull gray truck leaving the loading dock of the Morning Star Gazette in (what most of us would call) the dead of night. It makes its delivery of a stack of newspapers at one of the many houses in a particular suburb. The first sentence sets the mood perfectly. "The mornings of the paperboy are still dark and they are always cold even in the summer". A boy forces himself out of his warm bed and makes some breakfast for himself and his corgi dog. After bundling the papers up, the kid and his faithful companion make the familiar route and think their private thoughts. Just as the sun is rising, boy and dog have finished their job and they return home just as everyone else in the family is waking up. The paperboy and his pet, however, climb back into the bed, "which is still warm" and dream of soaring through the night sky.

The book records each small action that the paperboy accomplishes with a small unassuming note of triumph. Sentences like, "It's hard to ride a bike when you are loaded down with newspapers. But the paperboy has learned how to do this, and he is good at it". Also, getting out of a warm bed to do a job is exceedingly difficult to accomplish sometimes, "but they do". Kids don't have to ford rivers or climb mountains to be brave. Just making yourself to do something uncomfortable or unpleasant can be heroism enough. Pilkey recognizes this and celebrates it with understated aplomb.

I loved the fact that the dog in this book was a corgi, by the way. There just aren't enough corgis in children's literature, gol durn it! Aside from Tasha Tudor's books ("A Time To Keep" comes to mind), corgis are the most ignored picture book dogs out there. This is hard to figure when you consider just how cute and cuddly they are. They're the world's only permanent puppies! So if you happen to be a children's illustrator and you feel you have a certain amount of clout in the publishing world (ho ho!), get the word out: We Need More Corgis.

The obvious companion to this book, right off the top of my head, is "The Adventures of Sparrowboy", by Brian Pinkney. In fact, if Mr. Pinkney weren't such an original author in his own right, I'd be mighty suspicious regarding all the similarities between these two books. "Sparrowboy" follows an unassuming paperboy who acquires the power of flight. "The Paperboy" follows an unassuming paperboy who at the end of the book dreams of flight. Both are African-American young men who live in suburban neighborhoods. If you're more interested in doing a full-on paperboy storytime, also consider Don Brown's, "Kid Blink Beats the World". That's a kind of paperboy heroism the likes of which we'll probably never seen again. "Sparrowboy" and "Kid Blink" would be obvious pairings, but the tone of "The Paperboy" has far more in common with Jane Yolen's well-regarded, "Owl Moon". Both books revel in the feeling children have when they are out in the mysterious night and no one else is awake. If you're thinking about having a storytime that considers the natural mysteries that come when the sun is gone, these two are obvious companions. Read alone, however, "The Paperboy" will still extend its quiet bravery to the children that read it. Even if they've never seen a paperboy before, they'll understand how great it can sometimes be to have a job of one's very own

Good book for our children

Dav, Pilkey a great painting in the paperboy. there were very nice pictures. since the story was written by a few sentence every page, it really gave children more space to image on the story. alhough it's a simple story, it taught our children the most. in the story, Dav descripted what did a paperboy do in his job. and how hard that his work was. as a paperboy, he had to get up early in the morning and delievered his newpaper before anyone got up. eventhough it was hard for him to get up in the morning, he had a very good friend (his dog) would do it with him every morning. in fact, Dav had taught our children that FRIENDSHIP would not only be limit just with human, it could also be with our animals, too. at the same time, he did teach our children to love animals because they could be their friend. also, Dav had taught our children what RESPONSIBILITIES are. to be responable to his/her own responsibilites. in the story, the paperboy would finish his work before he went back to sleep. therefore, when our children grow up, they would know to take care of their responsibilities and not avoid them. it's a good book to teach children about responsibilities.

Powerful

This bible provides clear insight to a legacy of royalty that has long been forgotten and washed away. Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is at hand and when you bring your hand close make sure this bible is in it. King James had a version and this is the standard that has been set before us, but if you are able to read this bible and have spiritual insight you will be able to free your mind. This bible provides writing for the reader to read between the lines. For hundreds of years we (African-Americans) have been opressed. The time has come to rise from that opression and give our children, our future what they deserve...the truth. Buy this book. Not only for yourself, but for anyone who you can think to give it to and for any occassion. Let the truth be told and let our people finally be free.

Great Afro-centric Bible

I think that this a great bible for the average African-American Christian. I like how they give the translations for the names in the Bible in the beginning and the pictures of the biblical figures being of African descent. It allows the reader to identify more with the teachings and the words of the Bible in relation to their life being of African dscent. A must-have item for African-American Christians.
