It Is Finished!

Though William R. Newell's work on Romans is more famous, this verse-by-verse commentary on the pivotal and difficult book of Hebrews is also splendid. William Newell writes from a conservative and Dispensational viewpoint, and really makes the book of Hebrews come alive. The great emphasis of this book by W.R. Newell is his focus on all that Christ has accomplished on the cross and through His resurrection . Newell shows the importance of our position in Christ , and the absolute completeness and perfection of the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. He points out the errors of Roman Catholicism and other legalists, who continually try to add to Christ's once for all finished work, by the mass and 'law keeping'. Newell strongly preaches against sin, and poignantly points out errors of false teachers. This is a Christ honoring commentary, with great spiritual depth. On a side note, he seems to believe that the Apostle Paul wrote Hebrews. Highly recommended.

Outstanding

I am a huge fan of this commentary which dates from around the 1930s (I think). William Newell was one of the greatets Bible teachers of his day. A friend and colleague of D.L. Moody and R.A. Torrey, he taught thousands of people as a Bibke teacher in Moody's Bible college.
This book is the best commentary on Hebrew I have ever seen. it is excellent for three reasons:
1) It is very easy to understand despite being very in depth.
2) It accurately teaches the word. You can rely on it to explain the deeper truths of Hebrews.
3) It does not avoid the difficult passages but tackles them head on.

I find William Newell An out standing teacher .we could sure use more like him today Stays with the subject and does not try to give information with out the historical back ground for his teaching.The book is a contrast between the old covenant and the new and he holds to that not trying to put us back under law.
