Grade 6-10?A reassuring introduction paves the way for 10 chapters that share excerpts from interviews with various junior and senior high students who are children of divorced parents. Between their statements, Bolick weaves analyses of the meaning she perceives behind their words, evaluates their feelings and behaviors, and suggests applications for readers experiencing similar circumstances. A summary chapter ties together the young people's recommendations with professional tips and guidance. The information in the book rings true, but the students often seem to lack voice. Bolick isn't as skillful as Janet Bode in utilizing the technique whereby interview is combined with analysis in an unobtrusive manner. In How It Feels When Parents Divorce (Knopf, 1988), Jill Krementz's interruptions are kept to a minimum, grouped separately, or are nonexistent. Bolick's interjections make the YAs seem more like case studies than young people who have valuable information, feelings, and advice to share. Nevertheless, this volume may serve either to update or be a companion/step-up title to both Krementz's book and Eda LeShan's What's Going to Happen to Me? (Four Winds, 1984).?Celia A. Unlike Janet Bode, whose books turn solely on kids' comments, Bolick is a vocal presence here, not as an interviewer but as a commentator who adds background and speculates about the feelings expressed by the young people she's talked to. Although what she's doing is little more than amateur psychologizing (her credentials are in communication), her perspectives add texture to the stark testimonies ("I love my dad a lot, but it would have been a lot easier on me if he had died in a car wreck than to have him walk right out") and provide fertile ground for group discussion. The kids themselves evoke a variety of common issues--being caught between two angry parents, changing roles and responsibilities within the family, living with a stepparent, experiencing abuse--and Bolick has left their individual voices, which are often filled with pain and anger, strong and distinct. In the final chapter, she stresses the importance of communication (you can't "suck it up and get on with it") and suggests some ways young people can begin their personal healing process.
