Believing Is Only the Beginning
Do you long for a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in your life? Do you believe all the right things, go to church, and faithfully read your Bible, still feeling that something is missing? You may be right.
Two thousand years ago Jesus gave an urgent assignment to his followers right before he left. At its essence it was not just an invitation to believe; it was a bold call to action. It was a challenge to go into the world to reclaim, reform, and restore it for Christ.
Simply stated, the message of this book is that God has invited you to join him in this world-changing mission. And if you are not personally participating in God’s great endeavor, you could be missing the very thing he created you to do.
Best-selling author Rich Stearns invites you not just to stand on the sidelines but to get into the game. That is when the adventure begins.
“Unfinished, just might challenge everything you thought you understood about your Christian faith. Unfinished is a call to finish the job Christ gave his church to do. If every Christian read this book and took it seriously, the world would never be the same again.”―Bill Hybels, senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Church; and chairman, Willow Creek Association
“Just when I’ve gotten comfortable with my faith, here comes Rich Stearns, reminding me what matters and who God loves and why. Just when my world is the way I want it, Rich reminds me the world is not the way God wants it. Hungry families. Malnourished kids. Just when I dare think my work is done, Rich reminds me that we are just getting started. First in The Hole in Our Gospel, now in Unfinished, Rich gives me a kind, gracious kick. Thanks, Rich. (I think.)”―Max Lucado, pastor and best-selling author
“Okay, admit it: sometimes you wonder . . . don’t you? Is this it? The life you’re living. Is there more? From his journey in corporate and nonprofit leadership―in very good causes―Rich Stearns concludes there is, indeed, more. More purpose. More meaning. More life. In Unfinished you will discover how your life can be about more.”―Elisa Morgan, author; speaker; publisher, FullFill; and president emerita, MOPS International
“Rich Stearns has done it again! In this winsome, engaging, and challenging book, he calls us back to some of the key issues of what it means to be followers of Christ in a world full of distractions and false gods. This is a book for everyone, about finding the place of our calling in God’s global mission. It is a book about fulfillment, adventure, and a lifetime of transformation. It made me hungry for more of the life God has in store for us.”―Dr. Stephen Hayner, president, Columbia Theological Seminary
“Your story can be a part of the Great Story. Rich Stearns knows the story and lives the story. Unfinished may call you to the greatest chapter of your life.”―John Ortberg, senior pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church; and author, Who Is This Man?
“The kingdom is both already and not yet, the work of Christ both finished and to be completed. Stearns reminds readers of every Christian’s responsibility to live on mission, in light of Jesus’ example and call. Richard shows us by his life, the ministry he leads, and the passion of this book that there is much to be done and we are to be a part of God’s grand plan.”―Ed Stetzer, president, LifeWay Research; and author, Subversive Kingdom
“Every generation of Christians needs a wake-up call to remind us of how serious and strenuous are the demands of discipleship. May Rich Stearns’s Unfinished be that alarm for our time.”―David Neff, editorial vice president, Christianity Today

Review
"World Vision president Richard Stearns shares scripture and inspiring stories of people who make a difference to encourage a renewed sense of passion, meaning, and purpose in all Christians. The book explains the Christian response to God's invitation to be part of His greater work, which Stearns describes as finding one's own unique calling. With warmth and clarity, narrator Wayne Shepherd explains why patience and faithfulness are necessary in a journey of self-discovery. He perfectly renders Stearns's counsel to live the teachings of scripture because that effort is how listeners will find their unique callings. Stearns also criticizes consumer-oriented churches that entice attendance with latte bars or Vegas-style music, efforts that he believes are contrary to biblical teachings." A pleasant surprise, a deep and abiding call
By Dawn M.
As a theology student, I appreciated the biblical grounding and the prophetic voice of this book, it is exactly what the church needs. Two things struck me about this book, it's the strong call to action that the Christian world needs and it's a pleasant surprise for a second book. In the sophomore offering where most authors downshift, Rich Stearns instead has doubled-down on the message from The Hole in Our Gospel, turning his personal message outward to those who are sitting on the sidelines. His message: get in the game and find the significance you long for. There is a lot of kingdom work still undone, and we need to get to it. I was inspired and moved to stop doing the 'spiritual bodybuilding' that only benefits me, and get out there and exercise some muscle on behalf of the kingdom. A great book for anyone!

good read with misplaced emphasis
By B. Dempsey
There has been a rash of "total commitment" books published in the last few years. Books like Radical and Crazy Love have called for American Christians to rethink how the Gospel should affect how they live. Unfinished is a similar work in that it makes a clarion call for believers to completely sell out for Christ. Another key vein of writing within the Christian publishing tradition has become the theme of social justice and how the Gospel should affect society in that regard. Stearns ties the two together, much as he did in his first book, tying very closely the concepts of complete devotion to Christ and working towards social justice and poverty alleviation.
The book nailed it on a few points. The American church overall is in a bad way. We have neglected the Great Commission, and our churches are shrinking because we have allowed our walks with Christ to decline and lose their fervency. A call to restore passionate discipleship is needed and welcome, and Stearns provides it. The book also brings a greater awareness of the needs around the world that can be met through the outreach of missions. There is much to be commended.
However, there are a few areas of concern, much as there were with The Hole on our Gospel. Stearns frequent emphasis on advancing the kingdom in some places seems to confuse the Great Commission's advancement (through the making of disciples) with the advancement of kingdom morals through social justice. This comes to a head on page 53, when Stearns refers to the Great Commission as "nothing less than a calling to partner with God in establishing a new world order. This was the mission." If this is the measuring stick, then the church has indeed failed, and that miserably. Stearns also seems to lay fault for the delay in the Second Coming at the feet of the church- thus the title of the book. Once the task is finished, the End will come. These are two major weaknesses that distract from the beneficial call to discipleship. Christians need to keep in perspective that everything ultimately comes back to the Gospel and the call to make disciples to the glory of God. Everything else serves to advance the Gospel. Our social work is necessary, for it shows our faith- it does not contribute to a political empire, but reflects the love of the Savior to a world that desperately needs the light of redemption.

My experience with "Unfinished"is unfinished itself. Before I had even gotten to the end, I had already given away my original copy. It's that good. Now I'm on my second copy and eager to be a "Finisher". Rich Stearn's perspective on what is truth is inspiring and affirming. His call to be the kingdom of God here and now is motivating and exciting. You might as well get two copies now because you will want to give away this book, too.
