Great series
By berrysa
I used this, along with several of Peter Riley's other books in this series, to teach beginning physics to my elementary-aged homeschooled children. The explanations were easy to understand, and we enjoyed the demonstrations for each topic that were easily done with common household objects.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-Uniform, present-tense, "you are there" discussions. These titles are somewhat jovial in their portrayals of ghastly subject matters, downplaying the horrors of human sacrifice, for example. Cartoon characters are about to have a tree fall on them in Railroad and find frozen bodies in the water in Titanic. In Aztec Sacrifice, "you" are a captured warrior and end up having your heart cut out as an offering to the gods. Suggestions are made as to why a warrior would not be too scared, maybe because an herbal potion could make him feel drowsy and peaceful. Every spread offers a "Handy Hint" box. In Railroad, "you" are advised to "Steer clear of the saloons and casinos-." In Aztec Sacrifice, it is suggested that "you" make offers to your city's guardian god for protection. Of the three volumes, Aztec Sacrifice is the most gruesome and will therefore appeal to a certain clientele. Because of its ever-popular topic, Titanic will have no problem finding an audience. Because of its less-gory premise, Railroad might need to follow on the popularity of the other two titles. Heavily illustrated, colorful, and far from dull, these titles will have little trouble grabbing readers' interest.

Fun and funny
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
This book is a part of the You Wouldn't Want to Be series of children’s books, created by Salariya Book Company. Like all of the books in this series, this one has lots of brightly colored illustration and gobs of great, off-beat humor. The book presents life as a worker building the transcontinental railroad in all its unvarnished ghastliness. It’s the story of an Irish worker who comes to America looking for work (and food), and finds employment doing various jobs building the railroad.

This is a very funny book, one that honestly presents what workers went through, building railroads in the nineteenth century, but in a fun and funny manner that makes the book a real joy to read. So, if you have an older child or young adult who wants to read a definitely not-dry book on American history, then steer him or her to You Wouldn't Want to Work on the Railroad!...they’ll thank you later!

Classic book for Kids
By Guru H
My son thoroughly like these books reading them and mono acting the characters, 4 star because its price to number of pages ratio is very high, meaning you get less for the money you pay (hardly 30+ pages). But, still worth the kids collection.

The Caroling Book for Trombone Trio is a wonderful collection of 21 great Christmas Carols and Songs that will keep the party hopping, the audience singing and the spirit soaring all night long. Arranged by L.A. Philharmonic Sonny Ausman (straight tunes) and retired Professor Steve Sample (swing tunes), the music is within reach of most intermediate to advanced performers. Included in the collection are: Joy to the World O Come, All Ye Faithful Frosty the Snowman Away in a Manger Angels We Have Heard on High Let It Snow Silent Night The First Noel God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen O Little Town of Bethlehem Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Jingle Bells It Came Upon a Midnight Clear We Three Kings Mistletoe and Holly Winter Wonderland Go Tell It On the Mountain Ding Dong! Merrily On High Jingle Bell Rock Have Yourself A Merry Christmas Santa Baby Sometime There are only Three Growing up in Bessemer, Alabama I spent many a cold winter's night with my friends playing Christmas carols around the neighborhood and in remote locations on the front lawns of friends' andÊrelatives'Êhomes. It was great fun. There were usually only three of us. We just couldn't seem to enlist that one extra player. If we were lucky we had 3 trombones, but sometime there was a euphonium, tenor sax or bari sax substitute. Finding music was difficult. So we wrote arrangements taken from the hymn book and from other sources. This is the inspiration for this caroling book. I wanted to achieve two goals in compiling this set of carols: that there would be plenty of them and that they would be easily playable for most trombonists - on cold December nights. With the help of my good friend, Steve Sample, I believe we have succeeded. So take the book out this Christmas season and have fun. And please "swing" on Steve's arrangements.Ê

Sea Around Us, by Rachel Louise Carson

Published in 1951, The Sea Around Us was a phenomenal success. Rachel Carson's rare ability to combine scientific insight with moving, poetic prose catapulted her book to first place on The New York Times bestseller list, where it remained on top for thirty-one consecutive weeks. It stayed on the list for more than a year and a half and ultimately sold well over a million copies, has been translated into 28 languages, inspired an Academy Award-winning documentary, and won both the 1952 National Book Award and the John Burroughs Medal.
This commemorative edition has over 130 beautiful, full color illustrations from all over the world--everything from breaching whales, Christmas Tree worms and phosphorescent shrimp, to fur seals, flashlight fish, and giant squid. The volume features a foreword by Carl Safina, a founder of the Blue Ocean Institute; an introduction by explorer Robert D. Ballard, renowned for his role in finding the Titanic as well as for his discovery of life around deep-sea hydrothermal vents; and an afterword by Brian J. Skinner, an eminent geologist and former president of the Geological Society of America.
The book itself remains as fresh today as when it first appeared. Carson's writing teems with stunning, memorable images--the newly formed Earth cooling beneath an endlessly overcast sky; the centuries of nonstop rain that created the oceans; incredibly powerful tides moving 100 billion tons of water daily in the Bay of Fundy. Quite simply, she captures the mystery and allure of the ocean with a compelling blend of imagination and expertise.
For anyone who loves to wander the shore, sail the ocean, or ponder what lies beneath the waves, this illustrated special edition of The Sea Around Us will make a perfect gift.

Review

"A majestic edition, incorporating attractive photographs, a preface, foreword, introduction, and an excellent afterword by Brian J. Skinner. The pages are broad and smooth and heavy; turning them, you feel you are in the presence of greatness.... The prose is true and fluid and above all evocative, and delivers all the passion and wonder it did a half-century ago.... This book should be read first and foremost because it has permanent artistic value, because it is literature. And I mean literature in the best sense: popular, beautiful, deeply moving.... Carson's legacy is proof that science books matter, that good prose can change the world."--Anthony Doerr, The Boston Sunday Globe

"Her book remains fresh, in part because of her ability to convey scientific insight in vivid poetic language--but, perhaps more important, because what she has to say is still so relevant today."--Scientific American

"Magnificent--beautifully done, a real work of art. I'm enjoying reading Carson's book for the third time. Carl Safina's brief note summed it best--we read to remember her. What a wonderful writer."--Glenn Vanstrum, author of Saltwater Wilderness

"Perfect reading can be found in wonderfully oversized books.... In this new commemorative edition, readers who have never experienced Carson's sparkling prose or deep insight will have the opportunity to do so, with the added attraction of superlative color photos of everything from breaching whales to phosphorescent shrimp. There's also a new introduction by Robert Ballard, an afterward by Brian J. Skinner."--Dave Wood's Book Report

Before the first living cell was created, there may have been many trials and failures. It seems probable that, within the warm saltiness of the primeval sea, certain organic substances were fashioned from carbon dioxide, sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and calcium. Perhaps these were transition steps from which the complex molecules of protoplasm arose-molecules that somehow acquired the ability to reproduce themselves and begin the endless stream of life. It is doubtful that the first life possessed the substance chlorophyll, with which plants in sunlight transform lifeless chemicals into the living stuff of their tissues. Little sunshine could enter their dim world, penetrating the cloud banks from which fell the endless rains. Probably the sea's first children lived on the organic substances then present in the ocean waters, or, like the iron and sulphur bacteria that exist today, lived directly on inorganic food.

The Abyss:
By LastRanger
We live on a blue planet, it's surface is dominated by a vast, mysterious, expanse of trackless wilderness that we call the ocean. All life, as far as we know, sprang from its timeless embrace, diversifying into the countless forms that inhabit the Earth today. From the darkest depth of the ocean to the farthest reaches of land and air, life is the defining element of our world. But each and every living thing carries within it the pulsing, bitter, chemistry of the sea, in its blood and throughout its body. It's been said that we know less about Poseidon's watery domain than we do about our nearest celestial neighbor; the Moon. Be that as it may, the sea remains, to this very day, a hidden realm of secret places and eternal mystery. While there were many fine nature books written prior to 1951, Rachel Carson's "The Sea Around Us" (*) is the one that reset the bar for all those that followed. Written for the general public by an eminent biologist of the day, this book took readers to a place that few, if any, had even thought of. Winner of the National Book Award-Nonfiction and the Burroughs Medal for science writing "The Sea Around Us" spent an astounding 86 weeks on the New York Times best seller list and was an instant hit with readers everywhere. In spite of being written nearly 60 years ago many of it's concepts are still valid today and it remains one of the best nature books ever written. Yes, Oceanography and the study of marine life has come a long way over the intervening decades but the overall message is as vital today as it was during the early 20th Century. Carson was an all around naturalist and this book covers more than just sea life. Geology is an important part of any nature study, it sets the stage for all that follows. The formation of the Earth and how we came to have a moon are all covered with theories that were popular when Carson wrote this book. The mid-Atlantic Ridge was discovered around 1850 during the HMS Challenger Expedition but nobody knew what its function was or how it fit into the overall picture. So you won't find any mention of Sea-Floor Spreading, Continental Drift, Plate Tectonics or the Hawaiian Hot Spot in "The Sea Around Us", these are modern concepts that weren't accepted by the scientific "old guard" till late in the 1960s. What you will find is a stunning tour of the living sea from it's ancient beginning to our modern day explorations. In researching for her book the author consulted with other scientists in various fields, people like Jacques Cousteau and Thor Heyerdahl. An excerpt from Heyerdahl's personal letter to her gives an account of his observations of Pacific surface life taken while he was aboard his balsa wood raft "Kon-Tiki" in 1947. Beyond Biology Carson gives the reader an in depth review of ocean currents, wave action and the never ending tides. Island Biogeography is reviewed with thoughts on how various plants and animals may have migrated to the most remote islands or from one continent to another by using various pathways like; walking over temporary land bridges, riding in the wind or drifting on ocean currents. Delving into some other disciplines she examines the birth of an island, undersea volcanoes, the ever changing sea level and how Ice Ages impacted the ocean. Throughout the book Carson gives her views on Man's use, and abuse, of the sea. She also talks about climate change, warming Arctic seas and shrinking glaciers but, like some scientists today, she links these issues more to long term climate fluctuations rather than just human activities. Many of her views are just a relevant now as they were in the last century. Some of her comments seem to anticipate our modern fears of "global warming", environmental degradation and our threatened biodiversity. All of this is, of course, from the viewpoint of 1950's science, but Rachel Carson was a professional scientists and, as such, was fully aware that some of what she wrote about could be overturned or invalidated by future research, observations and findings. How much things can change in just a decade is covered in this 1961 edition with extensive notes and some thoughts on newer concepts. Now, some 60 years after publication, there are countless new books and authors that will bring us up to date on many of the issues covered in this book. "The Sea Around Us" is an excellent introduction to our Blue Planet's oceans and the many living things that call it home. So don't be put off by when it was written, I'm sure that anyone who loves reading about Natural History will find it well worth their time. I also think that Rachel Carson would be pleased and excited by our modern day findings and the many new theories in Oceanography and Biology. I had no technical or formatting problems with this Kindle edition.

(*) This is book 2 of Carson's "Sea Trilogy". Book 1 is "Under the Sea Wind" and book 3 is "The Edge of the Sea".

The Sea Around Us
By Penetralia
Rachel's enlightenment is truly seen in this new edition of "The Sea Around Us." The earth is covered in water; the human body contains a large percentage of h20; and most species on the planet cannot survive without it. Thus, the sea is truly everywhere around us.

This book is highly recommended for readers of "Silent Spring" and those interested in writings about the natural world. This text in particular may be more suitable than the (1999) prior edition as the photographs herein color the author's thoughts in a delightful way.

Good call. This book is a great book
By peaslick
This was a surprise read for me. I knew that this work was out of date when I ordered it, but I was willing to overlook mistakes of fact if Ms. Carson could give me insight. Good call. This book is a great book. If one has any feelings for the sea at all, she or he will enjoy this book immensely. Forget about continental shift or any other fact that one might find missing or incorrect when Ms. Carson wrote this book. We have Wikipedia nowadays for the finicky. Ms. Carson's love of the sea is timeless. Immediately upon finishing "The Sea Around Us", I had to call up Conrad's, "The Mirror of the Sea" (mentioned by Ms. Carson as one of the most moving books she had read). Two great books, especially if one reads them back to back. What a great experience!

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-- Ferguson alternates descriptions of periods in Hawking's life with nonmathematical explanations of his studies in physics. She uses numerous diagrams to help readers visualize the discussions; even so, the scientific sections become progressively harder to comprehend. In the end, it is difficult to imagine that many people will plow all the way through. Those with little background will simply give up; others with enough mathematical knowledge will want to see some of the equations that lead to Hawking's startling, counterintuitive results. Such criticism can justly be leveled at Hawking's A Brief History of Time (Bantam, 1988), which also convinces readers in the opening pages that all will be comprehensible at the end. The author provides a uniquely accurate popularization of a complex subject; some bits and pieces of insight improve upon Hawking's own book. The sections on the man are very readable, certainly less repetitive and mawkish than Sheridan Simon's Unlocking the Universe (Dillon, 1991), which omits more theory and thereby makes fewer demands on his readers. Nevertheless, all three books vary as to their readability, with peaks and valleys that reach different levels. --Margaret Chatham, formerly at Smithtown Library, NY

From Kirkus Reviews
Hawking is both a scientific superstar and a man widely admired for overcoming--indeed, all but ignoring--the degenerative muscular disease ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), which has robbed him of almost all movement but left his mind intact. Hawking is hot on the trail of the ``Theory of Everything,'' the basic understanding of how the universe came into being and what makes it tick. His brilliant theories encompass the big bang (if there was one); black holes (which may not be black); and the astonishing question of why, among the infinite possibilities, the universe chooses to exist in the unlikely way that it does. God, time, and our place in the cosmos all seem as important to him as the complex equations governing the fundamental particles. This splendid, carefully researched study of the man and his ideas--based on interviews with Hawking, a good knowledge of his subject, and many secondary sources--balances the fascination of physics (extremely well described) with the fascination of the man. By his work, Hawking has earned a comfortable home to share with his wife of 26 years and his children. Still, he and Jane Hawking are separated; she says he wants to do ``absolutely everything that comes to his notice,'' leaving little time for the family. Ego? Overcompensation? Or the sense of being so close to understanding that there's room for little else? Does the personal drama have anything to do with the universe? With this man and this universe, probably. Bought 5 more to give to friends!
By Karena
I love this devotional booklet. I feel that God is using these readings to speak directly to my heart. My time in the presence of God is sweeter than ever. Previous reviews have criticized Ms. Young for not providing a more comprehensive overview of the teachings of Jesus, but this is a devotional booklet not a commentary. It is designed to draw the reader closer to God and it is doing just that for me!
