She lays out her ultimate truths ("Kindness is more important than popularity"; "You were born to fly"), covering a different one in each chapter ("Confidence," "Reputation," "Patience," "Inner Beauty"). Written from a conservative Christian perspective, the text supplies biblical references to support each truth. Kampakis discusses why each of these topics is an important part of being a girl and how complete acceptance of God's plan is the best path to future happiness. The advice is reassuring and encouraging and the writing accessible, but the book only addresses Christian readers. Every Young Teen Girl Should Read It

Perfect book at the perfect time. Our daughter is going through a tough time at school – 9th grade. All of a sudden, girls have gotten so mean … really mean. Why do they do that? Is it part of coming of age? Do they make themselves feel older by attacking anything they perceive as child-like? So eager to be grown up. Either way, there comes a point when they are pretty sure you popped out of the womb as an adult and have never experienced what they are going through – as a result, they are pretty sure you don’t know what you are talking about. This book is perfect for bridging that gap. It speaks to young teen girls like a trusted friend in language they can understand. They also seem more willing to trust it since it is in writing and comes from somebody else. It is built around ten great messages. Things you really want your daughter to understand. I won’t steal the authors thunder to restating them hear, but in essence it is things that build their self-esteem, build their faith, and slow down on the boy crazy antics. Our daughter really enjoyed it (devoured it) and we have seen a real difference in her behavior. She seems more patient, stopped the desperate search for a homecoming date, and generally seems to feel better about herself. I love her with all my heart, and anything that can help her get through the teen years with less angst is awesome!

Awesome study for pre-teen/teen girls!

This book is amazing in MANY ways! First, the 10 truths are great:
10.) Kindess is more important than popularity
9.) You were born to fly
8.) Today's choices set the stage for your reputation
7.) Chasing boys doesn't make you cool. It makes you a nuisance (LOVE THIS ONE!!)
6.) You weren't made to worship yourself
5.) People peak at different times in life. Trust God's plan for you
4.) Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Otherwise you'll never stick to your guns
3.) Boys are visual creatures. The clothing choices you make affect the way they see you.
2.) Pretty girls are a dime a dozen. Outer beauty attracts attention, but inner beauty is what holds it
1.) The source of all peace and happiness lives inside you. Learn to listen to the whispers of God over the megaphone of public opinion.
As you can see, these are some pretty deep, but also relevant topics for teen girls today. One thing that makes this list great is that it uses language and stories to meet girls where they are! It puts Biblical examples and scripture in an accessible and practical light for these girls. Each Chapter begins with one of the truths (descending from 10-1), and that entire chapter explains that truth, gives examples, uses scripture, and has discussion questions all pertaining to that truth. This allows each truth to be thoroughly thought about, discussed, and truly absorbed.
Another thing I LOVE about this study is that it has "Quick quizzes" that give a scenario and a few choices of different reactions. For each reaction it offers a piece of wisdom. IE "If you answered B or D, you are thinking correctly. You've put your friend over a bad hair day and the bad attitude that can result. All of us have days we don't want to leave the house...." and so on. These quick quizzes bring real life situations to the table for discussion, so that takes these truths from a great theory into a teachable, practicing moment for the reader.
The final thing that made this study excellent is the discussion questions. They are at the end of each chapter, and are very thought provoking. They cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no" they demand explanation and are written to foster meaningful discussion.
Overall, this is a great study for any teen/pre-teen girl. It is grounded in Biblical principles, age appropriate, and fosters great discussion. This one would be best done in a small group, it is so rooted in discussion, I think a girl doing this on her own would lose some of the aspects of this study.

Every girl needs this book

This book is a quite literally a godsend. As much as we parents try to encourage our girls, steer them away from negative influences, encourage healthy relationships, and boost their self esteem, our words often fall flat. The message doesn't come out right, and our girls end up feeling misunderstood. The stakes are high, and anxiety rises. Then this book comes along like a life preserver. It's written for girls in a clear, thoughtful voice that speaks to them right where they are. Kari Kampakis has the ability to shine a laser light exactly on those tender, raw places where a girl is most vulnerable. She offers realistic and meaningful advice that helps girls navigate the pitfalls of adolescence with grace -- not just surviving the teen years, but thriving. She offers strategies for real life situations -- ways to keep the bigger picture in mind and live with integrity, rather than regret. Her guidance will help girls to quiet the noise, and listen to that still small voice inside that reminds them we were made for more than this world will often expect from us. The book is rooted in Christian wisdom, but never preachy or sanctimonious. Your girls will devour it and refer back to it over and over again. Parents -- I urge you to read it, too. There are lessons here for all of us. I only wish I had this book when I was a teen!
