Biographers have always found Henry VIII a controversial, albeit endlessly intriguing, character. This work, which is a radical departure from existing treatments in that it suggests that Henry was easily and often manipulated by those about him, will add to that controversy. Unfortunately, Starkey produces precious little in the way of new evidence to support his thesis (there are no footnotes and his bibliography is scant), and if his work has any real value it will be as a stimulus to debate. J.J. Scarisbrick's Henry VIII (1968), Lacey Baldwin Smith's Henry VIII: the mask of royalty (1971), and G.R. Black-and-white photographs of Rockwell and his family appear throughout as do numerous examples of his paintings, reproduced in full color. Cohen points out that his subject first immersed himself in painting to overcome the taunts he received as a child for being gawky and nonathletic. The artist's work for the Saturday Evening Post is highlighted and background information is provided for some his most famous illustrations. Although no sources are cited, Cohen includes quotes from Rockwell, supporting his dedication to his art and personal beliefs of "kindness, decency, friendship, family ties, and patriotism," which now are synonymous with the man. Although...billed as a biography for children, even adults will find the book offers a new perspective on the artist (and) may learn some trivia about "America's best-loved illustrator"... As popular as his art was, he battled throughout this long career with low self-esteem...Students will identify with the boy who was unathletic, painfully shy...(yet later) reached out to everyone in town to model for him. (Former models describe the fun he had with them in the studio.)

Rockwell's life story is described in a simple, straightforward manner. Photographs of the artist and his family, along with full-color reproductions of his most famous works show young readers the "Rockwell style" from his early Saturday Evening Post covers to his final works on civil rights themes.

Joel H. Cohen has published thirty books, most of them for young readers and most with or about prominent athletes and entertainers such as Hank Aaron, Jim Palmer, Bill Cosby and Lucille Ball. His articles have appeared in various magazines and newspapers, including Sports Illustrated for Kids, Scholastic Scope, American Girl, TV Guide, Parents and the New York Times. He and his wife, Nancy, have four children, and live in Staten Island, New York.

Rockwell's life story is a fascinating read, and this book features numerous beautiful, full-color reproductions of his work. The author makes a persuasive case for Rockwell as a genius whose work endures throught the decades, and it's an inspiring story for readers of all ages.

This book is GREAT!

My husband bought this book for us this past spring. My children, who are almost 2 and almost 4, both love this book. I am glad to have found a book that encourages the values that I am trying to teach them, such as honesty, being helpful to others, and other similar values. I recomend this book to anyone who has children, young or older.

Delightful book!

I loved this book for my son when he was little. It teaches positive, Christian principles without being preachy, and it is a good alternative to traditional nursery rhymes, which don't really teach much of anything at all.

Morris Scores Again

Henry M. Morris, a foremost Bible scholar, scientist, and scholar, has produced yet another great volume filled with Biblical truths that all Christians should read.
Dr. Morris's views on the validity of literal Bible interpretation and the infallibility of the Bible are represented eloquently throughout the more than 6000 annotations in the Defender's Study Bible. He strives to explain difficult passages in a clear and concise manner. He refuses to compromise in order to maintain the authority of true Biblical Christianity and doctrine. He applies what the Bible says to modern life, constantly comparing numerous things in the Bible to their contemporary equivalents.
One of the greatest aspects of this study Bible is its clear views on controversial matters. Where other study Bibles and other commentators will take a neutral stance, Morris presents what he believes to be the truth--what he feels the authors meant by what they said--and compassionately, lovingly, tactfully, and thoroughly defends his belief while presenting and disproving those of others.
Morris himself wrote in his introduction that the Defender's Study Bible follows a literal approach to the Bible. He says, "Based on this literal and contextual approach, the notes become what one might call Baptistic in ecclesiology, pre-millennial in eschatology, non-charismatic in pneumatology and moderately Calvinistic in soteriology." While no attempt is made in his notes to formulate formal doctrines, they do support the above-mentioned ones.
Also of interest is the eighteen appendices at the back of this Bible covering the scientific evidences proving the Bible and evolution vs. creation.
If you are interested in what the Word of God truly says, the Defender's Study Bible is for you. I highly recommend it.

This Bible includes the study notes of Dr. Henry M. Morris, who is a foremost scholar in creation oriented studies. Dr. Morris thoroughly debunks the RELIGIOUS fallacy of Evolution (Evidence for which still not forthcoming!).If you don't like the RELIGION forced on your kids in school in the name of science, then this is for you.

Best Study Bible!

This is the greatest study bible that I have seen. Mostly because it is the only bible that I have found that supports biblical creationism. Morris also gives great study helps for archaeology, reference, and life application. I do not see how one person who reviewed this bible said that Morris does not know his archaeology. He also fails to give an example, so don't even consider what he says because this is a great study bible.

Gr 5-7-These three rivers have had an enormous impact on their surroundings and these books attempt to explain their importance. Each one gives an overview of its subject, including geological, geographical, and environmental features, and contains maps and color and black-and-white photos and reproductions. Colorado focuses on the course of the river and its related landforms, including the Grand Canyon. There is also an extensive section on dams and their ability to produce hydroelectric power, as well as on the many irrigation canals and ditches built along the river. The ancient peoples of the area are described, as are Spanish and American explorers. Tigris and Euphrates has a small opening section about the rivers themselves, but the rest of the text is virtually a history lesson on the region, which has sustained such ancient cultures as Babylonia and Assyria. Whitcraft also includes the modern nations' fight for control of the rivers. Sidebars contain interesting tidbits of information. This wonderful little book is a look at Mesopotamia/Iraq, from ancient times to about 1999 (when the book was published). Filled with bright pictures, and easy to follow text, this is a great book for anyone who wants to get a quick, easy-to-understand, eagle-eye view of Iraq. Indeed, this book may be listed as a young adult book, but anyone will find it interesting and informative. I highly recommend this book!
