Most complete study Bible I have ever used

The Matthew Henry Study Bible is an excellent integration of the well-known and long-uitlized Matthew Henry Commentary of the Whole Bible. Every idea is explained so very well. I have used this Bible for personal Bible Study, for preparing sermons, and now that I am working with Yokefellows Prison Ministry, this Bible has been a great help in answering the many, thought-provoking questions the inmates ask. I have used several other study Bibles that I probably should not name here. But not one of them comes close to being as helpful and as comprehensive as the Matthew Henry Study Bible.

excellent for devotional

I have the entire MH 6 vol commentary. I suggest you get the 6 vol set because the MH bible contains just a concise version of it. It's excellent for devotional. If you are looking for serious study material you will not find it here. The concordance is just a few pages it's of no value what so ever. I strongly recommend it for believers who are desiring a deeper spiritual walk.

Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is at hand and when you bring your hand close make sure this bible is in it. King James had a version and this is the standard that has been set before us, but if you are able to read this bible and have spiritual insight you will be able to free your mind. This bible provides writing for the reader to read between the lines. For hundreds of years we (African-Americans) have been opressed. The time has come to rise from that opression and give our children, our future what they deserve...the truth. Buy this book. Not only for yourself, but for anyone who you can think to give it to and for any occassion. Let the truth be told and let our people finally be free.

I think that this a great bible for the average African-American Christian. I like how they give the translations for the names in the Bible in the beginning and the pictures of the biblical figures being of African descent. It allows the reader to identify more with the teachings and the words of the Bible in relation to their life being of African dscent. A must-have item for African-American Christians.

Goldman portrays both figures through careful research duly footnoted. He paints the background by deftly stroking in the concepts of Sioux culture and history. While the book offers an excellent look at the decline of the Sioux, it stands out as an in-depth look at a fascinating historical personality. Crazy Horse was above all an individual, a loner who was seen as peculiar by many, a fast friend, brave warrior, and cruel to his enemies. At 23, he was acknowledged as war chief of the Oglalas; by the end, he was cast out of the Shirt-Wearers (the ruling council) and betrayed by former friends. Russell Freedman's The Life and Death of Crazy Horse (Holiday, 1996) has a handsome format and a profusion of drawings by Amos Bad Heart Bull. The books complement each other well. Freedman focuses tightly on Crazy Horse. His shorter sentences and frequent quotes convey a sense of immediacy, while Goldman leisurely paints the Big Picture: cultural background and biographical sketches of key figures who set the events in motion. Freedman's title will be more accessible to a younger audience; mature readers will appreciate the complexity of details and Goldman's analysis of the aftermath of Crazy Horse's death.?Marilyn Payne Phillips, University City Public Library, MO

A Sioux Warrior Seen in a New Light

Here is an American tale that has been widely overlooked (perhaps purposely), a story from the perspective of the original Americans. The Sioux were indeed violent but they were far from uncivilized, and there is more to their story than what occurred at Little Big Horn. Goldman examines the Sioux warrior/chief, Crazy Horse, from a new and original perspective that may anger some and enlighten others. It's worth the read.

How Sound Waves Travel and Ear Anatomy

Positives: Nicely illustrated with photos of children of diverse ethnicity as well as colorful, simple and clear drawings of animals and all parts of the ear (outer, middle, and inner). I say "simple" drawings because each page illustration is neat and uncluttered, unlike the myriad, busy, and confusing drawings that are squeezed onto each page of "The Magic School Bus" series. The illustrations in this book, "Hearing", allow the child to focus, and if the book is used in a classroom setting, the pictures are large enough to hold up in front of the group. The book also contains a glossary of difficult vocabulary, such as "cochlea" and "semicircular canal", that enables you to easily introduce the hard words to younger children. Most of the vocabulary is simple enough for first graders to handle with a little help, and informative enough to hold the interest of eight to ten year olds.

I purchased the book blindly on the internet because the author has not arranged for a "Look inside the book" option at Amazon. I was hoping for a book that would inform my six-year-old nephew of the dangers of loud noises and how to protect himself from hearing loss. Unfortunately the book says very little about it. It does, however, cover the subject of how sound travels in waves through water, air, and wood, and how that sound is picked up by the outer ear, travels through the ear canal and continues through the various parts of the middle and inner ear. When the author mentions the eardrum, one page has a nice illustrated drawing and the opposite page has a picture of a girl playing a drum. When the cochlea is compared to a snail, there's a snail on the lower left corner of the illustrated parts of the inner ear.

As for the loud noise information that I had hoped to find, on page 17, where it discusses the inner ear, it says, "Loud sounds make big waves and can hurt the hair lining of the cochlea." Then on page 22, Having Healthy Ears, the first tidbit of advice is, "When you clean your ears, use a cotton swab;" the fourth tidbit is, "Don't put anything in your ears;" and the last is, "Don't listen to music too loudly." If the dangers and preventive measures of loud noise had been discussed, and the matter of the cotton swab had been omitted or clarified, I would have gladly given this book five stars. I guess I'll have to write my own book on "STOP THAT NOISE, PLEASE!" or "I WANT TO HEAR UNTIL I'M 103."
