This Scofield Study Bible was published in 1988 and is an excellent choice for the note taker, [Sturdy Note-Taking Bible]. I have three in my personal library and I have used two. It holds up well for those who write copious amounts of notes in their Bibles. The Editorial Revision Committee is a list of the great theologians of a past generation -- John Walvoord (President, Dallas Theological Seminary), Frank Gaebelein (Headmaster, The Stony Brook School), Charles Feinberg (Dean, Talbot Theological Seminary), Wilbur M. Overall good purchase

I was very pleased with my purchase. The pages were clean and unmarked, however there are some in the Old Testament part where the writing is faded and illegible. It looks like it may have been left open in the sun too long. This is not really a major issue as I have another Bible the same version and can copy what's missing onto the pages. Fast delivery.

From her amateur debut at 16 (or possibly 14), Ella Fitzgerald has shown an ability to adapt to changes in fortune and musical taste, keeping her at or near the top of her profession for more than half a century. While this biography doesn't significantly update Kliment's (1988), it does draw on a wider range of sources, including previously unpublished material, and brings the singer's discography up to 1990's All That Jazz. Wyman also does a fine job of placing Fitzgerald in context, with a clear picture of the history of jazz in the 20's and 30's and the prejudicial treatment African-American artists received--at least until promoter Norman Grantz's insistence on integrated seating for his ongoing ``Jazz at the Philharmonic'' tours began to break down some barriers. Fitzgerald has always kept her private life to herself, but this respectful account of her career gives a good sense of her personality and singing style, as well as her place in American musical history. a competent biography

I found this book in the juvenile biography section of the library, although the information given doesn't indicate that it might be suitable for teens. In my opinion, both teens and adults could read it with profit. It covers much of the same ground as Bud Kliment's book but goes into a little more detail. All the photos are grouped together in the middle of the book, which is probably a less appealing placement for teens. I didn't like the sans serif typeface; most people find this style of type more difficult to read.

I liked the book because it was exciting, and it gave real examples of people helping others. The stories in the book are all very exciting because they tell about real people who risk their lives to save others. The book also talked about the Carnegie Hero Fund, an organization that recongnizes herosim by awarding medals to people. I think it is good that people recognize how much it means to save another person's life. I would very much reconmmend this book to anyone because it is not a book that just a few people can enjoy but it has stories that everyone can enjoy too. It is also interesting to read what some of the heros say years later about their acts. I also hope that more people get to read this book soon.

Great learning tool about Germs and other hygiene topics

What Are Germs was a great book we were able to pair with a hygiene lesson. There is a lot of interest amoung young children and germs- so why not educate them!? We found the topic to be timely and interesting for school groups of most elementary ages. If possible, pair this book with a hygiene lesson or other infection control activity. For example, students can write their own books based on the What Are Germs concepts.

This book is amazing. It connects the Biblical story of God parting the Red Sea for Moses and his people to help us in our daily struggles. The author gives ten rules that give comfort and reality in a sometimes frightening world. I bought many copies and have given them to family and friends.

Godly living in difficult times

Morgan was feeling overwhelmed with life's pressures when he turned to his daily Bible reading, Exodus 14. In further study and meditation on that chapter he identified ten principles for handling dilemmas and discouragements. He has found them to be an effective strategy for coping with the stresses of life.

His Red Sea Rule #1: Realize that God meant for you to be where you are. Rule #2: Be more concerned for God's glory than for your relief. He realized that asking the right question is essential. Rather than asking, “How can I get out of this mess?”, ask, “How can God be glorified in this situation?”

He continues to explore the biblical passage, identifying his rules. Some of them are expected, like Rule #4: Pray. He clarifies our choice – pray or panic.

Some of his rules will require discipline, like Rule #5: Stay calm and confident and give God time to work. Committing the situation to Him and waiting for Him to work is often hard. But Morgan also has a rule about taking the next step.

He has included many stories to illustrate his rules. Some are from his own life, some from biographies and many from the Bible. He includes stories of God's miraculous deliverance in Rule #8: Trust God to deliver in His own unique way. He describes God delivering overtly (through a miracle), covertly (by providence), and mysteriously (a deeper level of intervention than we can discern).

Each of the rules is a little Bible study in its own. Morgan has included questions for thought after each chapter.

This is a great little book. It would make a good devotional study, reading a chapter a day. It would also be a good book for a small group. Each of the rules is a practical and biblical principle that will help us live out our daily lives to the glory of God.

When you don't know what to do, God will see you through

The Red Sea Rules: 10 God-Given Strategies for Difficult Times by Robert J. Morgan is a ten step, devotional look at Exodus chapter 14. In Exodus 14, the Israelites had just Egypt. Pharaoh has changed his mind about letting the Israelites go from Egypt to Canaan. Just as the Egyptian army is beginning to catch up to the Israelite slaves, God leads them to a place by the Red Sea. With nowhere else to go, the Israelites have to trust that the God who had brought them to the Red Sea would bring them out to victory.

Morgan looks at this story and finds ten messages that he wants to share to encourage those who are going through hard times. From the beginning lesson which is to simply trust that God has you where he wants you to be until the ending lesson of remembering to give praise to God, these lessons are all solid examples of principles that you can draw from the story of the crossing of the Red Sea.

This book is diminutive. However, a powerful book doesn’t have to be big. In fact, it probably won’t take more than a couple of hours for you to read through. However, it’s encouraging. The message is timeless. The apostle Paul tells us in Romans that one of the reasons why the Bible stories are given to us is so that we have examples of God’s faithfulness and instructions on how we should live.

This book does a great job at pointing out how we should live a life of trusting God. It also reminds us that when we’re in a situation that we just can’t see a way out of, God is able. God can deliver us. He is able to do it in a way that is beyond our imagining. Our job is to trust that he will deliver and to trust that even when we can’t see the way, God is there leading and that’s when a miracle can happen.

All too often this classic loser finds himself cornered by some bully. When he is not being stuffed inside a locker or a trash can, Jacob suffers other forms of humiliation that are relayed in a string of colorful anecdotes. While running laps around the gym, he accidentally tramples Maria Tresser, the most beautiful girl in the school. Cupid's arrow strikes, and Jacob's seemingly hopeless infatuation leads to one disaster after another; but he finally wins a date with the girl of his dreams. Although Paulsen's pace may leave some readers breathless, most will relish the sharp wit and incredible energy of this ironic glimpse of high school life and young romance. Ages 11-14.

Grade 6-8-- Jacob Freisten, thin and freckled, the "ugliest boy in history except for one," according to his own assessment, and a total clod to boot, has perfected the art of near invisibility, of being "there but not there." He leads the kind of exaggeratedly painful life that requires careful timing and planning so he can avoid attracting attention; if people notice him, there's always a comic disaster. He even goofs up in his daydreams. His parents drink too much, his mother is devoted to his sister's blossoming career as a beauty contest winner, and he's close to failing English. His English teacher ropes him into working on the school production of The Wizard of Oz for extra credit, appropriately enough as the understage controller of the fog machine. This gives him an opportunity to work with Maria Tressor, the most perfect girl in the school, on whom he has a rapidly intensifying crush. But it's a mixed blessing. When it's time to fog, Jacob, the consummate timing expert, flubs it badly, and in the confusion he blurts his feelings out to Maria. She says an astonishing yes to his feeble invitation for a date, and romance blooms because, she tells him, he's a winner. This brief, humorous look at adolescent life, complete with distorted self-concept, is a departure from the intensity of much of Paulsen's work, but is no less of a survival story in its own way. The novel is told mostly through a third-person narrative with little conversation until the end, which has the effect of distancing readers; it becomes a gently ironic fable of transformation and first love, in which many readers will find themselves. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Department of Education, Montpelier

Hatchet was miles better

Jacob is the high school student that we all remember, and sympathize with to some extent: the social misfit who is beneath the quirky geek clique; a kid who is so socially inept that he never speaks to anyone, and indeed spends most of his time and energy figuring out how to avoid conversation altogether.

The book follows Jacob as he maneuvers his way through a distant home life and a harrowing school life. One of the most beautiful girls in school takes note of him when he is assigned to operate the fog machine in the school play, but he is so smitten with her that his usual social awkwardness devolves into a tongue-tied panic.

The Good and the Bad:

I liked the character of Jacob, and I certainly remember a student or two in school who he reminds me of. The book does a good job of fleshing out that anonymous character, and giving us reasons that contribute to that type of personality. The writing is also engaging and fun, with funny descriptive metaphors that are sure to capture the imagination of many children. But I rate the book fairly low because it is presented as a realistic story, but many of the scenes are so unrealistic as to seem surreal, or at least borrowed from a low-budget made-for-tv comedy about the horrors of high school (thought the characters seemed more junior-highish to me). For example, when Jacob accidentally stumbles into a school bully, the bully promptly stuffs him into a locker without so much as a word. There are no pop culture references, no shades of nuance in most of the characters, and a series of stereotypes about the jocks who seem to make up the majority of Jacob's classmates. Also straining belief was Jacob's over-the-top clumsiness, which often left him sprawling around like a clown in front of a crowd of peers. Nevertheless, the book is a quick and enjoyable read, and may give students a moment of reflection about their near-invisible classmates. The socially awkward student himself, however, is not likely to gain much in the way of constructive advice, as the solution to Jacob's problems lie in the persistence of a beautiful girl who is willing to put aside all of the social hierarchy because she wants to date Jacob.

The Boy Who Owned the School by Gary Paulsen keeps you on the edge of your seat. Jacob Freisten, a middle school student, was an extremely unusual boy. Jacob does not like to be noticed by any of his friends and peers. He makes a fool out of himself in front of the girl of his dreams. The story leads up to Jacob getting embarrassed.
This book is a must read because at the end of every chapter it leaves the reader hanging. The end was unusual to read you�ll just have to pick up the book to see how unusual. There were so many exciting details.
Gary Paulsen is an outdoor man. All of his books are based around nature. He had to fend for himself because his parents drank too much. Once he walked into a library to get warm. If you want to know more about The Boy Who Owned the School check it out in your library

It Was Okay

I liked the book because it was funny. They also did a play of the Wizard Of Oz. This boy named Jacob secretly likes this girl named Maria Tresser. One of the funny parts is when Jacob is running and he trips and falls on Maria Tresser. It was funny because he trips on his shoelace on the pritiest girl in school.
one of the bad things is when you know that the girl in the story is going to say yes to go on a date. It is always boring when they live happily ever after. Why fdoesn't the story ever end in a sad ending or something. If I were you I would rent it first before I buy it because, it is only about 85 pages and 14 chapters long. Your kids might like it.

Not Up to Date

The description says this map is from 2010. It is actually from 2006. There is an entire freeway exchange in Bastrop that is not on the map. It also falls apart at the creases after one use. It is a little easier to read but not all roads are clearly marked and it is five years out of date. A lot can happen in five years. I contacted Rand McNally and they confirmed that the map is from 2006. I returned the map to Amazon with no trouble.

Perhaps I didn't read the fine print of the description closely enough, but...realize that West Texas is on one side of the map and East Texas is on the other. As a result, if you bought two maps and overlapped them to have one for the wall the actual dimensions would be about twice the area. I did buy it to put on the wall but my plan is to use pushpins to track where I've traveled and concentrating on East Texas suits my purpose. I agree it probably would not tolerate a lot of folding and unfolding but it's really big so I'm not sure it would work well for trying to read in the car. And I suppose if you live on the edge of the map, you might be consulting one side, flipping it over as you travel, then back again, etc.

great map.. paper too thin..

This is a great map printed on poor stock. Mine ripped at the folds the FIRST time I opened it. I though, my bad. Well, it's now torn itself in three places. It's a shame, because the print is large enough to read and a good product.. EXCEPT for the paper used. If you could find this laminated, it would be excellent.
