Straight from page one, readers will take a shining to Venola Mae Cutright, the sassy heroine of Ware's first book, presented entirely as letters the 11-year-old writes during the spring and summer of 1996. The main recipients of her frank, funny communiques, replete with numerous soul-baring digressions, are the circulation director of the local newspaper, who, after Venola's pestering, gives her a paper route; her best friend, Sally, away at camp with Venola's nemesis, at whom Venola hurls various barbs; and, most comically, the mail-order company from which she purchased a supply of greatly hyped yet ill-fated sea monkeys. After discovering that the creatures are actually brine shrimp eggs, the indignant Venola wails, in a letter to Sally, "THEY WILL NEVER GROW GOLDEN CROWNS OR LOOK LIKE THE PICTURES IN THE MAGAZINE!" Ware uses the epistolary framework to full advantage, displaying Venola's peppy, dramatic personality in vivid color. The one-sided correspondence, however, leaves little room for readers to know more than the single character. The only other person to emerge with any dimension is the outlandish Miss Wilma, one of Venola's newspaper customers, who lives above a funeral parlor (and whose graphic shop talk leads Venola to opt for cremation). Even so, most readers will hope that Ware will post further communication from this avid pen-pal before too long. Ages 9-11.

Grade 3-6?Since her best friend, Sally, is away at camp for the summer, Venola Mae, 11, sets her sights on taking over her brother's paper route (despite her mother's objections) and getting her sea monkeys to grow. She is lively and outspoken, a junior feminist among her more traditional family and peers. She writes to the newspaper circulation director to plead her case, and sends suggestions and complaints to the sea monkey company. She succeeds at her paper route and, along the way, strikes up a friendship with elderly, lonely Miss Wilma. The girl's relationship with Sally is tested when Sally shows a new interest in boys and isn't impressed with Miss Wilma, but Venola Mae finds solace in her independence and the wisdom of her new friend. Set in contemporary West Virginia, this story, told entirely through Venola Mae's letters (most of them to Sally), has an old-fashioned tone. And although Venola Mae is a likable protagonist, her unrelenting energy and cheerfulness begin to wear on readers, as does the predictable, slightly plodding plot and the epistolary format. Gr. 4^-6. Venola Mae Cutright is spending the summer before her seventh-grade year writing letters. Not only does she keep up an active correspondence with her friend Sally at camp but she also writes to her boss at the newspaper where she is a paper carrier and to the Imperial Sea Monkey Company, whose product is less than satisfactory. The format of one short letter after another will have appeal for kids who want a fast, breezy read. However, they may have a problem identifying with Venola, who, at times, seems younger than her years--or perhaps like a kid from an earlier era, when sea monkeys could be at the center of a 12-year-old's concerns. There are plenty of funny moments here, and that's one of the book's strengths, but an explicit look at how an embalmer does his work may bother some. (However, it's not as bad as some of the scenes in the current crop of horror fiction for middle-graders.) Ilene Cooper

A great book!

A couple of years ago, my grandaughter and I went to the library in Parsons, WV, while vacationing in the mountains. Sea Monkey Summer caught her eye because she likes monkeys. We read part of the book the same evening and had to turn it back in before we finished reading the book. We laughed throughout the book and I was able to obtain a copy so that she could finish reading. She is 11 years old now and says that Sea Monkey Summer is her favorite book in the whole world. I have just ordered 3 other books written by Cheryl Ware and I know she will enjoy them as much.
