About the Author
Jacqueline Morley studied English at Oxford University. She has taught English and History with a focus on the history of everyday life. She has written historical fiction and non-fiction for children and is author of the prize winning An Egyptian Pyramid.

Antram was born in Brighton, England. He studied at Eastbourne College of Art and then worked in advertising for 15 years before becoming a full-time artist.

David Salariya was born in Dundee, Scotland. He has illustrated a wide range of books and has created and designed many new series for publishers both in the U.K. and U.S.A. In 1989 he established The Salariya Book Company. He lives in Brighton with his wife, the illustrator Shirley Willis, and their son, Jonathan.

Teaching and Learning made fun

As a social studies teacher (this year teaching Ancient Civilizations), I have used this series of books as support material in my classroom. I feel that the author and illustrator have made the facts a lot more fun. By using engaging graphics and understandable text, they have made learning fun for all students

Amuse, Entertain, and Educate

Jacqueline Morley, wherever you are, my boys love your books. They never fail to get jaws to drop and spur on some chuckling. In You Wouldn't Want to Work on the Great Wall of China!: Defenses You'd Rather Not Build, Morley combines facts, humor (e.g., "If the Emperor sends you on an impossible mission, it's best not to return"), and silly illustrations to really teach and entertain about the emperor, the terra cotta warriors, and all about the Great Wall. Great for older kids--not good for the youngers since there's a bunch of icky stuff talked about which is appropriate historically but not good for particular audiences (e.g., "Handy Hint: If you're desperately in debt, sell your children (daughters first) as slaves." and "Handy Hint: Only give birth to sons. A daughter will be a disappointment to your family.")

I read this to my sixth graders as part of a lesson on Ancient China. I didn't give it 4 stars because it was a little busy, but other than that, it was an entertaining way to teach. Catching illustrations, and lots of good information.

Great History for Young Readers

A great compact, but comprehensive, biography of Vlad the Impaler. They do a great job of creating an overview that's historically accurate (yes, there are impalements and cruel punishments as diversion,) without being so wildly horrific as to be inappropriate for a young audience.

8th grade students can't put it down

We are supposed to start our school day with 20 minutes of silent reading, and this is not an easy sell for 8th graders. I bought a couple of these books and the students actually fight over who gets to read them! I read the book myself and was deeply interested in spite of myself. I was impressed by the thoughtful and multifaceted presentation of the subject matter.

Easy read...a few "facts" questionable.

An easy read with many pictures and accepted facts (a few of which are questionable). Gives the basic life story of Vlad Dracula with several German sources quoted (several of which were admittedly documented many years after the fact). If studying Dracula this book alone should not be used as a single source to "uncover" the truth, but over all a quick and good read.

Compelling and informative, showing a complex man of action

Son of Thunder shows the evolution of both the man as well as the evolution of individual liberty as a political reality. The author covers enough of Henry's youth to show how it helped create the patriot and rabble-rouser, then moves quickly to the defining events leading to revolution (this includes Henry's own conflicts with being an advocate of freedom while being a slave owner). Henry's political force was a brick in the foundation of our Bill of Rights. This work shows how this came to be and why it was vitally important to the birth of the nation. Highly recommended for the amateur historian, constitutional scholar, or modern day patriot.

Many people think..........

......he was a fictional character. A couple of years ago, I had this book on my desk, and a Nurse tried to argue with me to the effect that "Patrick Henry wasn't real". Poor soul, I never did convince her...Even if you accept that he was real, all you probably know is an eight second sound bite from an 8-10 minute speech. There was a LOT more to Mr. Henry than that.

This was no enigmatic Tom Jefferson or glacially distant George Washington; Henry was the nicest, and most personable of men. What you saw was what you got. Oh, he was tough in the courtroom, and in legislative debate, but he was, in most ways, an ordinary man supporting his [large] family with an extraordinary talent. He had his troubles: the initial failures at running a tavern drove him to the law [Who were the three signers of his law license? That's still debated]...his first wife's long mental illness, and eventual death just as The Revolution was starting would have taxed any man. But, Henry had a mission, and kept going.

At the time of "Liberty or Death", Patrick Henry had been a prominent legislator for ten years. Remember the "Stamp Act"?...And, before that, the "Parson's Cause", our first important court case on religious liberty? And after the famous speech...first elected Governor of Virginia...Militia Colonel...bitter opponent of ratification of the US Constitution...father [along with George Mason] of the "Bill of Rights". His ratification debates with John Marshall are the stuff of legend. Though Henry and Marshall were opponents, they remained friends, and law partners.[The famous Randolph murder case] Both were surpassingly nice guys. Henry was the father-in-law of Marshall's opponent, and enemy, Judge Spencer Roane. Marshall was so nice that his enemies liked him: Roane was so acidly unpleasant that even his friends couldn't stand him.

Henry had but one real enemy, and that was his political ally, Mr. Jefferson. The circumstances go back to the aftermath of Jefferson's unhappy time as Governor. The story is beyond this review, but was probably a misunderstanding. These are the two men largely responsible for our own freedom of religion; very different men. Henry was a lifelong devout Christian, and loyal Anglican, the nephew of a Priest, the son of a Vestryman. But, he always supported liberty. He was taught toleration early by his "dissenter" mother. [Dissenter doesn't mean athiest: in Mrs. Henry's case, it means Presbyterian: in some cases, Baptist. Methodists weren't dissenters; they were considered a branch of the Anglicans].The "Parsons Cause" was far from his only court case on the matter. When Baptist minister John Weatherford was jailed in Chesterfield County, near where I live, for preaching the Gospel, Henry got him out of the charges, and quietly paid his costs.[Weatherford didn't find out till later who had paid his fines]. Baptists telling this story will usually leave out the fact that an Episcopalian lawyer got Weatherford out of the mess...Episcopalians leave out Weatherford's name...From me, you get both. Though Mr. Jefferson wrote the "Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom", Patrick Henry laid much of the practical foundation.

On a personal note, I am honored to be, occasionally, one of the actors who regularly present a reenactment of The Second Virginia Convention of March 23, 1775 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond. Yes, the original site is still an active Church. I'm not Mr. Henry, I'm either John Tazewell, or Thomas Nelson, jr. Should you ever get a chance to see either Mike Wells or Kevin McGranahan play Patrick Henry, take it. Different men, different renditions, both superb. Which do I prefer? Of course I don't dare say, since both are friends, who might read this. The honest answer is I don't know. My wife prefers one, my son and daughter the other, but I prefer both. This fine book is sold in the gift shop at St. Johns, and at Scotchtown, Henry's home in Hanover County. It is well written, and comprehensive. It is, sadly, the only academic biography of Mr. Henry we have in print. Robert Douthat Meade, famed as biographer of Judah P. Benjamin, wrote a wonderful two volume biography of Mr. Henry, published in 1957, and in 1969. Good luck finding it. But, even if you have Dr. Meade's [I do, signed; I won't tell where I got it, but it set me back $55], I can recommend this volume strongly. It's time you knew...

Grade 8 Up-This volume traces the struggle against discrimination from Lee's surrender to the end of school segregation. The 14 chapters are enhanced by black-and-white photographs and reproductions and quotes from contemporary individuals who fought prejudice. The events and people included are both familiar (Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Thurgood Marshall) and lesser-known, such as Charlotte Hawkins Brown, who founded a school for black students in North Carolina and fought for voting rights of African-American women. While Wormser's use of the present tense to narrate the past may be disconcerting, it gives a sense of immediacy to this well-organized history of the civil rights movement.

Drawing on oral histories, he conveys what daily life was like for ordinary people: sharecroppers, factory workers, soldiers, children. He details the roles of important leaders who tried to change things, and he traces the growing power of the NAACP. There are no footnotes, even for direct quotes, but the chapter bibliographies will help teens who want to read more about this wrenching history and the roots of the civil rights struggle. Great book easy to read great price and fast shipping
The only problem was with the delivery company FEDEX THEY JUST WRAPPED IT IN A TRASH BAG AND TOSSED IT ON THE GROUND BY THE ROAD REALLY HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR THE BIBLE.

Fun and funny

This book is a part of the You Wouldn't Want to Be series of children’s books, created by Salariya Book Company. Like all of the books in this series, this one has lots of brightly colored illustration and gobs of great, off-beat humor. The book presents life as a worker building the transcontinental railroad in all its unvarnished ghastliness. It’s the story of an Irish worker who comes to America looking for work (and food), and finds employment doing various jobs building the railroad.

This is a very funny book, one that honestly presents what workers went through, building railroads in the nineteenth century, but in a fun and funny manner that makes the book a real joy to read. So, if you have an older child or young adult who wants to read a definitely not-dry book on American history, then steer him or her to You Wouldn't Want to Work on the Railroad!...they’ll thank you later!

It was great fun. There were usually only three of us. We just couldn't seem to enlist that one extra player. If we were lucky we had 3 trombones, but sometime there was a euphonium, tenor sax or bari sax substitute. Finding music was difficult. So we wrote arrangements taken from the hymn book and from other sources. This is the inspiration for this caroling book. I wanted to achieve two goals in compiling this set of carols: that there would be plenty of them and that they would be easily playable for most trombonists - on cold December nights. With the help of my good friend, Steve Sample, I believe we have succeeded. So take the book out this Christmas season and have fun. And please "swing" on Steve's arrangements.Ê
