Here as in all 3, the problems of covering 4.5 billion years in 48 pages are oversimplification and a distorted sense of time. This volume also has some content errors. For example, Brontosaurus is not called by its new name Apatasaurus and is depicted as being pursued by Tyrannosaurus Rex instead of Allosaurus. Other illustrations show early horses having toes like Eohippus (55 million years ago) on bodies like Merychippus (12 million years ago). How People First Lived covers 100,000 years of human history and highlights such major events as the control of fire, the invention of tools and the wheel, domestication of animals and agriculture, religion, travel, settlements, language and war. The writing style works best in How the Universe Began . The explanation of the Big Bang Theory is, by necessity for this age level, cursory. The scope attempted by the size and format of these books makes it almost impossible to present these topics with any accuracy.
