Grade 4-6-At first glance, these profusely illustrated books appear to be a lighthearted approach to some grim chapters in the history of the world. Chapter titles are often blithe and the cartoon art depicts the gory and abominable treatment of one group of people by another. But closer examination of the texts and pictures reveals informative books, packed full of the facts students often seek. The first title describes the life of a woman from the Black Sea area who is kidnapped and taken to serve as a slave in ancient Greece. The treatment of the slaves by the aristocracy is depicted along with descriptions of everyday life. Gladiator highlights the superiority of the Roman army, which returned its prisoners to Rome where they were trained to be arena fighters. Rules of battle and types of gladiators are described. Mention is also made of the simulated sea battles that took place in the flooded arenas and of staged wild-animal hunts. Mummy covers the process of embalming and mummification along with the symbolic features of an Egyptian burial. Discoveries of tombs and modern beliefs about mummies are also included. While these books cover material included in other titles, their approach to history will be extremely popular with students who relish a bit of blood and guts along with their historical facts.

About the Author
David Antram was born in Brighton, England, in 1958. He studied at Eastbourne College of Art and then worked in advertising for 15 years before becoming a full-time illustrator. He has since illustrated well over 100 titles, mainly for children and young adults, including around 60 in the bestselling 'You Wouldn't Want to Be' series.

This Homeschooling Family Loves it!

My 9 year old son is studying Rome as part of our unit study and I picked this book up because I thought that it looked interesting... well, I completely underestimated it!!! He devoured this and I believe that his independent research of Rome outside of "class" is a result of the clever illustrations and nibblets of information that come across in interesting ways throughout this book. I went ahead and ordered the books on Pompeii and Roman Soldiers and he absorbed them with the same hunger and speed. This is a series that we will be adding to our history studies for sure. I could not recommend this more - it is fun and education, just what school should be!

This book is like you are being told what will happen at gladiator school. That is what makes it funny. Even though it is funny, you learn things. For instance, did you know that you would have to eat barley grains and roasted beans for dinner and ash for dessert? Another reason I like this book is the illustrations. The illustrations also make the book funny because they make the people look weird. You may have read another books in the "You wouldn't want to" series. As you know they are really good books.

We are working our way through this series, and so far this one is our favorite. If you do history unit studies, or if you just want to get your kids excited about history, start with a book from this series. They are gory, silly, and thoroughly entertaining; your kids will never suspect how much they're learning!

About the Author
John Malam studied archaeology at the University of Birmingham, England, and worked as an archaeologist at historic sites across Britain before becoming a full-time writer. He specializes in children's non-fiction. He has written more than one hundred books, including "An Ancient Greek Temple, Ancient Egyptian Jobs "and "Titanic, Shipwrecks and Sunken Treasure".

Antram was born in Brighton, England. He studied at Eastbourne College of Art and then worked in advertising for 15 years before becoming a full-time artist.

David Salariya was born in Dundee, Scotland. He has illustrated a wide range of books and has created and designed many new series for publishers both in the U.K. and U.S.A. In 1989 he established The Salariya Book Company. He lives in Brighton with his wife, the illustrator Shirley Willis, and their son, Jonathan.

Love This Series!

My daughter is eight and just loves this series. She recently requested that I borrow the Mammoth Hunter one from the library again, so I just went ahead and bought it from Amazon. It is funny, the information on the book says that the reading level is for ages 4-8. No wonder the 1st Grade teacher was confused! This series is marvelous for 3rd - 5th grades, as the other reviewer said. They are rather sophisticated in layout (many fast-paced "blurbs" of informtaion splattered on the pages instead of a slow, steady narrative), language, and themes. But, how fun is it to learn the down and dirty aspects about historical times and cultures? So fun! Really a hoot of a series. Not only does my daughter thoroughly enjoy these books, but I've purchased them for my friend's son who is a couple years older, and he loves them, too! In other words, I think that these books will have a long shelf life in the interest realm of your child.

just as good as the others in this series

My grade 4 daughter loved this book, as she has with many others in this series. It is funny, informative and kept her reading.

I don't know why people judge books by their expectations (e.g., it wasn't good for my grade 1 students, so I'll give it only 3 stars) and not on its own merits. Book is not meant to be read by grade 1s. It's much better for grades 3 - 5.

Lots of information presented in a funny manner

This is a great book for kids to learn about mammoths. The cartoons are great and the information is precise and concise. I would highly recommend for the 6-10 year old who is interested in mammoths.

About the Author

This Study Bible Contains a Small Reference Library!

I was looking for a New American Standard Bible translation to use for my writing which would complement my other translations at home. This hardcover edition of The MacArthur Study Bible (Updated Edition) definitely provided me so much more than just the basic, inexpensive, hardbound NASB translation that I was looking for.

The text is easy to read, printed on (thin) quality paper and is loaded with study features. Each page of my Large Print Edition is nicely arranged for study with a double-column format and relevant study notes at the bottom of each page. The notes are in a different font style so they are distinct from the biblical text. A center column on each page contains additional verse references and literal word renderings.

Some of the features include a pretty traditional set of maps, an excellent concordance and an exceptional series of charts spread throughout the Old and New Testaments, providing a tremendous amount of relevant study information. The placement of the charts and study notes on the applicable page make referencing the material much simpler than other Study Bibles, like the Thompson Chain Reference Bible and the Scofield Study Bible. A general Introduction to the Bible is also included, along with information on How We Got The Bible, How To Study The Bible and a nice explanation on how to best use the general format of this Bible. The OT and NT have an additional introduction, as well as information on the Pentateuch (First five books of the OT) and an introduction to the OT Prophets. Each book of the OT and NT also have its own individual introduction.

As you can see, this isn't your grandfather's Bible. It's a fully-equipped Study Bible with enough helpful reference material to keep you busy for quite some time! The notes and other material are written with the general reader in mind; that is, they are very helpful and you don't have to be a Bible scholar to understand them. That in itself is a big plus.

The hardcover I purchased comes with a dust jacket and because I chose the Large Print Edition, it is a rather thick, heavy book (2 1/2 inches thick & over 4 and a half pounds). Thankfully, I don't plan on carrying it around with me, and it will stay on my computer desk at home. With such a large volume, I am concerned how well the binding will hold up over time, since it is not a stitched binding? Whether it does or not, I will add an addendum to this review later on and let you know.

I got a deal on my copy from a seller on Amazon.com (60% off -- Like New), so with the NASB translation I was looking for, all of the study notes and a bushel of reference material I would want in a study Bible, it will probably come as no surprise to hear I am very pleased with The MacArthur Study Bible.

Enriching and Trustworthy; NOTE re Large Print edition

John MacArthur's commentary broadens my understanding of scripture and adds instructive historical perspective. At the same time, it helps me to focus on a passage's core spiritual truths and its applications to my life.

I love John MacArthur's sermons (I listen online), and am now thrilled to find this treasure-trove of exposition.

I have both the 2006 NASB "MacArthur Study Bible" and the 2005 "The MacArthur Bible Commentary". I've compared the two in terms of content (not exhaustively, but fairly extensively), and I believe the 2006 study bible DOES have all the same charts, maps and articles of the 2005 commentary, though several have been renamed and moved to a different section or location. Also, the commentary itself seems to be identical between these two works.

LARGE PRINT: I have the large print edition (bonded leather). Both the scripture and the commentary are significantly larger than in the normal print edition, and though the "large-print" commentary isn't AS large as the "large-print" scripture itself, the commentary is still quite a bit larger than it is in the regular print bible and is clearly legible. The scripture font is NOT as large as my other "Giant Print" bible, but is in keeping with "Large Print" expectations.

KINDLE edition warning: The charts and maps are too small to be legible. After attempting to read the commentary on my Kindle for a few weeks, I went ahead and bought the full study bible (hard copy, not Kindle) solely in order to view these charts and maps in larger print.

Made for a wonderful gift. Very pleased!

Now John, how about doing one more... in the King James Version. I'd give anything to have such a thing. It wouldn't be very profitable and I KNOW you and the ministry have NEVER been in it for the money. 46 years of Grace To You testify to that fact clearly. I realize you have preferred the NASB since the precious days of mentoring under Dr. Feinberg at Talbot. I understand the connection and sweet mentoring relationship there. It makes perfect sense. But it would be a very special gift to so many if you'd consider such an undertaking. And I don't underestimate the undertaking. It is massive I realize. Thanks for hearing me out though. I bought my first tape series from GTY in 1979.

sweetly subversive story, beautiful pictures

Can you imagine a children's book about messiness which does not end with the character discovering the error of her ways and (literally and figuratively) straightening up? Instead, Molly's free-spirited approach to storing her personal possessions is celebrated. Molly, her friends, and the family pets revel in the glorious mess, and even her uptight parents and little brother come to see the advantages of disorder. A highlight is a wordless double-page spread showing Molly's room in all its splendour. Ask your child to locate different objects, a la the "I Spy" books.

Children love it, too!

Although an avid Anne Tyler fan, I just discovered this book she wrote for children and I now number it among my favorites. I find it perfectly charming to see childhood "messiness" vindicated. My grandchildren (ages 8 to 13) thoroughly enjoy the book, too. I can tell they relate to "Messy Molly," although maintaining that their own bedrooms are never as messy as the wonderful two-page spread of Molly's room.

Messier is Better!!!

This book is the perfect vidication for those of us who are hopelessly sloppy. How can we contend with the celebrated neatness of this person or that person? How can we explain that there is indeed a method to our madness? We are messy for a reason! Anne Tyler does a wonderful job championing our cause and Mitra Modarressi's illustrations are perfect to keep children rivited. I read this to my friend's 7-year old, and I finally had a valid explanation for why there are "so many things on my bedroom floor."

PreSchool-Grade 1?The familiar children's verse is given a new interpretation in this lovely book in which each double-page spread is truly a work of art. Mavor's art form is fabric relief, a technique including applique, embroidery, wrapping, dyeing, and soft sculpture to create appealing, tactile pictures that children will love to pore over. They capture the rural setting and period of the poem first published in 1830, with details overflowing onto the borders framed by strips of woven fabrics. The lamb itself is a charming character fashioned from hundreds of French knots in fine wool yarn. Helpful background information is given at the end for those interested in the origins of the poem and the controversy surrounding its authorship, as well a note on the production of Mavor's art. Two other versions of the poem are available, Bruce McMillan's photographic rendition set in the present (Scholastic, 1990) and Tomie dePaola's more historical presentation (Holiday, 1984). Visual new take on classic poem

Mavor is a genius in using scraps of whatever to create a textural world that is as comfortable as this classic story poem. Look at each page, and look again, there seems no end to details that embellish these sewn illustrations. Yummies for your eye, and if only we could touch!

Our daughter keeps asking to read this classic poem/song again and again. Mayor's illustrations are a masterpiece of three-dimensional textile work, combining many different techniques. She has also captured many historical details of the era in which the poem was originally written. The result adds depth and detail to a simple story, which makes it a pleasure to read again and again.
