She introduces more than a hundred: some religious at base, some totally secular; some occasions for rejoicing, others mournful; some marking life stages or seasons, others designed to keep historical events fresh in the collective memory. The alphabetically arranged entries run from a half page to an entire spread and are illustrated mostly with small color photographs. They conclude with a particularly useful feature--a reference to similar holidays. Into general accounts of each holiday's origins and meanings, the author stirs generous quantities of specific information about characteristic practices and regional variations. She doesn't shy away from controversy, explaining, for instance, why Irish Protestants marching on Orange Day stay away from Catholic areas. Back matter includes descriptions of seven major calendars and a schedule of holidays, 2001-2005. Although this won't replace Henderson and Thompson's hefty Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World or similar books in the reference collection, this will be just the ticket for short reports--and for young researchers studying connections between human cultures. This book is great for teaching children about holidays of other nations. The descriptions are a very nice length, short enough to keep interest and long enough to give good detail. I do, however, wish the holidays were listed in chronological order and not alphabetical. It very difficult to find, for example, how and when other nations celebrate the new year.

"Walking with God" is a really wonderful book written by a man who loves God and allows God to use him in a powerful way - a true treasure! For many years I've heard Dr. Stanley's messages. They have helped me so very much in my daily life. Before this book became available I had thought I would love for there to be information in a compact book to use myself and to share with others - when I learned of this book, I rejoiced, truly thanked God for it. I have bought it for different people as gifts because of what it means to me and I feel can mean to others.

"For most gulls it is not flying that matters, but eating. For this gull, though, it was not eating that mattered, but flight." Flight is indeed the metaphor that makes the story soar. Ultimately this is a fable about the importance of seeking a higher purpose in life, even if your flock, tribe, or neighborhood finds your ambition threatening. (At one point our beloved gull is even banished from his flock.) By not compromising his higher vision, Jonathan gets the ultimate payoff: transcendence. Ultimately, he learns the meaning of love and kindness. The dreamy seagull photographs by Russell Munson provide just the right illustrations--although the overall packaging does seem a bit dated (keep in mind that it was first published in 1970). A rich and enjoyable allegory

I've read many reviews on this book. I'm not satisfied with most. Most both negative and positive have poor reasons.
Most negatives I read just don't like mindless hippy-ness and empty new age philosophy (neither do I); they think the book propagates these things so they condemn it. It only propagates mindlessness if you are short-sited enough to assume that is its message. Don't be.
Most positives I read just demonstrate the mindlessness that the negatives dislike. There is more to get out of this book than the "feel-good" aspect.
To those who think the subject matter is thoughtless: look deeper.
This is a much more accurate view of heaven than what most people have discerned from the Bible. If you want evidence of this, read Mark 12:34 in context. Heaven is not a place.
It also indicates some of Bach's suspicions about the true nature of messiahs (Muhammad, Buddah, Jesus) that the world upholds and a possiblity of their true nature.
It is clear that Bach meant flying for seagulls to represent learning for humans. I am in agreement with him that this is what we do best and what life is about: learning, growing. In fact this is (ironically) the same viewpoint that the negative spotlight reviewer, dbsholes, seems to have (go read new books; don't become stagnant).
I like that the highest rung on Bach's "learning ladder" seemed to be love. This parallels biblical teaching (1 Jn 4:16; 1 Co 13).
The most important idea (in my opinion) that the book hints at is the possiblity that God is not a being, but a mind of which we are a part.
If this sounds like foolishness, read the first chapter of Swarm Intelligence (SI) by James Kennedy and Russel C. Eberhart, a graduate level discussion of minds (with a focus on artificial intelligence). The first chapter of SI is a discourse on the nature of minds (and how much of a misunderstanding most people have about what they really are). I wouldn't immediately buy it unless you are a Computer Science graduate focusing on AI or a Psychology major, but it is definately worth a check-out from the library, although I doubt a non-collegiate library would have it.
We don't have to overcome the laws of nature. Never does the book state that the seagulls are overcoming the laws of nature. They are simply coming to realize that the laws of nature don't limit them, that the only thing limiting them is themselves. We assume the laws limit us when in fact they are the tools set up to help us.
I don't know if Bach thought he was just making this stuff up, but the reality is he has hit the nail right on the head.
There is more to the book than I have listed here. I'll leave the rest for you to discover.

A Very Moving Story

If you allow your imagination the freedom to do so It follows the story of Jesus Christ quiet closely. It makes the bird the hero and central character. I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that the story line had that similarity. It was an emotionally moving story that I strongly recomend being read alone in one sitting.

A must read

I was born in late 1970s. And a full 15 years to read & write English fairly well. That makes it around 1991. I picked up this book at a used book store in India when I was 16 years old. I was able to read it in under 30 minutes. But from then onwards I've bought at least 3 copies of this book and have read it umpteen number of times.

The book had a huge impact in shaping my outlook to life, instilling and reinforcing my desire to be better at what I do [its quite another thing whether I was able to achieve it :)]. I guess its important that you have lofty goals. Aim for the stars may be you'll reach 100 feet into the air. May be you'll learn to fly - if not like Livingston Seagull - at least like his lousy flying brethern.

Along with Ayn Rand, I'd rate Bach's this work at the very top of what one should read in one's formative years.

I'm a Software Developer by profession and I at least once in a day think: It always works, when you know what you're doing.

The beginning exercise used to differentiate cetaceans from other animals distinguishes a spotted dolphin and an orca from a blue shark and a Florida manatee, when manatees are sea mammals, like whales and dolphins. On the illustrated overview of animal classification, the section on mammals includes a drawing of an orca, an elephant, and a frog. The two-page entries that describe individual dolphins and whales contain almost anecdotal information. For example, the blue whale entry describes these creatures as being able to "communicate with songs that carry across thousands of miles of water." According to Steve Parker's Whales and Dolphins (Sierra Club, 1994), the songs of the male blue whale carry 60 miles. Full-color photographs illustrate each entry, but Elin Kelsey's Finding Out about Whales (Owl, 1998) has more exciting pictures. Another Soild Read in this Fine Series!

This is a fine starter series for kids interested studying different animals. Whales and Dolphins: What They Have in Common is our most recent adventure with the wonderful and interesting Animals in Order series...what can I say, my kids just can't get enough of these! What I like a great deal about this series is that it takes time at the beginning of each book to look at (briefly) what makes an animal a cetacean, specifically getting into what traits exactly make an animal a cetacean. The book then goes into the "order" of living things which details the kingdom, phylum and class , order, family and species (with a handy visual chart for reference, great for younger kids, so they can SEE how it works rather than just read it or have it read to them). This is one of the better features of this series and the exact same text in this particular section appears in every book in the series. Next the text goes specifically into where cetaceans fit into animal kingdom, breaking it down (in words and pictures again) to kingdom (animal), phylum (chordate), class (mammal) and order (cetacean). In this section we learn that there are 17 orders of mammals and that cetaceans can be further divided into several different families and genera which can and that there are about 90 species of cetaceans!

The book also talks a bit about where cetaceans of all types and sizes fit into food chain and looks specifically at dolphins, porpoises, toothed whales and baleen whales. Whales and Dolphins: What They Have in Common goes from there into an overview of fourteen species complete with full page, color photographs for each one, which really serve to bring the information to life. This section includes Family, Common Example, Genus and Species and Size for each cetacean discussed and each animal is given one full page for written description and one full page COLOR photo...excellent for fully engaging the reader! Cetaceans included here are bottlenose dolphins, river dolphins, porpoises, sperm whales, belugas, blue whales, and humpback whales!

Overall, a fantastic way to introduce various types of cetaceans to your curious young reader! What you get in Whales and Dolphins: What They Have in Common is an excellent overview of cross section of types of cetaceans. A unique feature of this particular book (something that isn't in other books we've read in this series) is the section near the end titled "A Look at the Future." This section very briefly (less than one full typed page (spread out over three with half-page photos) which looks at researchers and scientists who study cetaceans and some of the problems facing these animals (pollution, over-fishing, ect...). As always with this series, I was pleased to find that at the end of the book the author/publisher also included a short recommended reading list and some really great web pages to do more research on...the kids in particular LOVED this! The books in this series would make a wonderful addition to a classroom library or as gifts for your favorite young reader who has a passion for animals; the information here is scientifically presented, accented with wonderful color photos and is both interesting and informative!

He embarks on a ``no-matter-how-wide-awake-you-are-I-can-make-you-sleepy'' story that takes a boy just like his son on a long, (hopefully) exhausting journey through a ``boily-boily jungle,'' up a ``pooa, pooa tree,'' to the moon and back. Alex interrupts on occasion, but dad never skips a beat. The thrilling adventure, complete with a breathless chase and a soothing flight through the heavens, should have provided ample fodder for sweet dreams. Alex snuggles down, yet despite repeated suggestions that he is getting ``very, very tired,'' he outlasts his fictional counterpart. The warm, loving relationship between father and son is clearly evident in the text and the soft realististic watercolors. The tropical scenes and nocturnal skyscapes are lush, rich, and completely nonthreatening. Even the toothy ``thingamajig'' is really harmless. The juxtaposition of the full-page, larger-than-life dream sequences with the framed bedroom scenes bordered by night sky are very effective. This is Cazet at his best; he has taken an age-old theme and given it fresh, humorous enchantment.

Father shapes a bedtime story to wakeful Alex's comments. He begins with a boy (pictured as Alex) walking in the jungle; but when the boy closes ``his weary eyes,'' Alex pops up: ``The boily, boily jungle made me thirsty.'' So it goes, until Father finally captures Alex's full attention with a trip to the moon, with the boy followed by a mild-looking but many-horned ``thingamajig.'' This time, when the boy makes his way back home to bed, Alex, too, is ready to call it a night. A jacket photo suggests that Father is the author's self-portrait, while Alex also bears a strong family resemblance. The improvised story is authentically haphazard; meanwhile, the book is a model of creative interplay between parent and child, a theme beautifully extended in the illustrations. The more formally bordered bedroom scenes include a toy dog that joins Alex in Father's story; the story-within-the story illustrations are imaginative, dreamlike. What bedtime is really about

This book looks at the humor involved in putting one's child to bed. A father attempts to put his child to bed all the while making up an amusing story. The child takes the made up tale to new hights and every word becomes a suggestion. It is a fairly short story so it keeps everyone entertained for just the right length of time. It is also a story that is written to delight the both the child and the parent. My child loved this book like no other.

Si quieres leer un libro de cómo aplicar referencias bíblicas a tu vida como líder y emprendedor te va a servir bastante. Si no quieres relacionar la biblia con tu vida profesional y personal no te va a gustar. A mí me pareció un libro muy bueno.
