From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3. Joyously written and illustrated, these four poems reflect the concerns of children. In "Big Shoes," the young narrator proclaims: "All I want is big shoes/Tie shoes/Fast shoes/Red and black jump high shoes./Line them up by Daddy's/and call them all our shoes." "Spin," "Noah's Moon," and "Baby Sister" round out the set. Each poem is accompanied by realistic oil paintings reproduced in luminous full color. Together they capture the spirit of African-American Noah, whose poems these are, amid his loving parents and two sisters. The artwork catches touching moments of affection and play among the family members; it enhances the text's energy by using changing perspectives and motion. Varied page design adds interest. This title will be a treat to read aloud, and newly independent readers will take to it as well.?Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA

From Kirkus Reviews
This story from Johnson (The Rolling Store, p. 300, etc.) consists of four short verses (``Big Shoes,'' ``Spin,'' ``Noah's Moon,'' and ``Baby Sister'') about the happy home life of a young African-American boy. Family love and the shared stories and symbols that connect the generations are pervasive themes (as they are in all of Johnson's works); Mitchell embodies these themes in vivid oil illustrations by showing the boy narrator as the child of artists and introducing each of his poems with one of the parents' paintings. In the last spread, readers see the paintings hanging on the wall of the family's home studio. This may be a book to pair with Peter Catalanotto's The Painter (1995), for two glimpses of the lives of artists. (Picture book. 3-6) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

I hate to give this book 2 stars but the last ...
By AngieBB
I hate to give this book 2 stars but the last page says 'daddy calls me man.' The rest of the story is about the little boy's interaction with his other family members. I have 3 sons. I was hoping for a story about a father son relationship. I bought this book hastily based on a Facebook recommendation (so many people said it was so good). I admit that I did not read the details of the story...I plan to give this book to someone who may find it more relevant.

evokes a warm and tender mood that captures the blessing of family.

Daddy Calls Me ManDaddy Calls Me Man written by Angela Johnson and illustrated by Rhonda Mitchell depicts a happy, functioning family. The cover shows Noah and Ad sharing a deep belly laugh which appeals to the reader and makes one want to turn the page for more.
The illustrations are wonderful, full of energy and radiating emotion. The story opens with a spread of shoes: “Big shoes… all I want is big shoes.” Clearly the little boy aspires to fill his papa’s big shoes. Noah imagines many ways in which he can walk in shoes.
At day’s end nestled under his bed covers, Noah peers at the moon, thinking big thoughts “Asking why…” Perhaps he trying to figure out how to make room for his new baby sister. The story concludes with a spread featuring the boy standing beside his father who is seated at an easel. Obviously, dad is an artist, Behind them on the wall are several of the illustrations that appeared throughout the story. This is a delightful surprise which explains the various “styles” of art that grace the pages. Daddy Calls Me Man evokes a warm and tender mood that captures the blessing of family. --Gayle H. Swift, "ABC, Adoption & Me: A Multicultural Picture Book"

Adoption-attuned Lens: This story pictures an African-American family that is happy and successful. It is not an “issues” book. It’s simply about joyful moments in the ordinary parts of a family’s days. The dad is an artist–a novel choice of occupation to be included in a children’s story. One of the things I like best about this book is that it shows a family being happy, being ordinary. This is an important message to children of color. All too often the stories focus exclusively on the struggle, on poverty, on the urban experience. It is refreshing to see this family of color simply being family.–Gayle H. Lack of Story Line, but Beautiful Pictures
By Lauren J.
I bought this book with the intention of providing my son with more books that show other little boys and children like him. We love reading together and although we are a biracial family, I don't like the fact that the vast majority of my son's books reflect people who don't look like him. I wanted to find more books that he could relate to or identify with. The pictures and colors in this book are beautiful, but a storyline is almost absent. I was expecting to read a story about a father and son and instead got pages of short, choppy sentences that aren't really put together well. That was really disappointing. The only reason I'm not giving this book one star is because my son does point to the little boy and say his own name as if he thinks it's him in the story. He's never done that before with his other books so I guess it's serving it's purpose in a small way. I'll just have to make up my own story to go with the pictures.
