He reads an egg, fries his morning paper, and sweeps his dirt floor until it becomes a basement. Finally, exhausted, he goes to sleep, but only after watering his bed and curling up on his plants. In A Friend for Dragon , the lonely fellow, encouraged by an unseen mischievous snake, adopts an apple for a friend. Once the snake is gone, the apple's conversation is limited, but Dragon finds many good qualities in his new pal--it is a good listener and it is always willing to share. Unfortunately, the apple is left unattended and is devoured by a hungry walrus. A heartbroken Dragon buries his friend but his loneliness is short-lived. An apple falls on his head and Dragon looks up to see a treeful of round, red friends. The gentle humor of these stories is accentuated by Pilkey's simple but engaging cartoons. Swirls and dots bejewel the skies, giving the pictures a colorful, childlike appeal. Dragon's good-natured naivete should win him many new friends. --Lori A. This is by far the best series for first graders. All five books are truly funny, sophisticated, and enjoyable for any age, yet the simple words are perfect for advanced early readers not yet ready for chapters. There is nothing else like it at this reading level. They should be in every first grade classroom. PLEASE PRINT MORE!

Too cute!

Mind you, I'm in ninth grade, and I originally bought this for the kids I baby-sit for. But after I had read it through the first time, I fell in love with it! I can't wait to read it to the kids.
This is a story about Dragon, who wakes up groggy, and goes about his day doing everything backward. There are some extremely funny parts to this book, and the illustrations are just as good as the story.

For a baby, like the one at the center of this gentle and lyrical book, it means lying in a cradleboard at the center of family life, ``in the moon of the raspberries,'' while mother works, children play, and father returns with a canoe full of fish. For a big sister, it means helping with the berry-drying and watching grandmother fashion a toy. And it means fashioning a ``dream net'' from willow and nettle-stalk to hang at baby's head, where it catches dreams that even a big sister might fear, while letting good dreams--of sucking maple suger, dancing, running--come through. Young's pastels are vibrantly colored but as tender as the text. The faces in soft shadow or semi-profile could be Everychild's, but the beautifully filtered light belongs only to a woodland-and-water setting. The pages are bordered with a flower garland that might come from the folk art of many peoples. With a willow twig and nettle-stalk twine, an Ojibway baby's sister weaves a weblike ``dreamcatcher'' to hang above the crib and sift out bad dreams. The baby sleeps and wakes and sleeps again, the family busy around it. Young's unfocused, impressionistic pastels capture the simplicity of the infant's changing moods with shifts of color and hazy but expressive faces. The authentically scary bad dreams--evil-eyed white owl Kokokoo and a ``raggedy man...his birchbark mask glowing like a ghost''--catch in the net until, ``struck by morning light,'' they die. Some of the text is white, legible on the darker backgrounds but less so on pale spreads like one showing the father in his canoe. On the Ojibwa Islands of the Great Lakes many people wove nets to protect their babies from harmful dreams. They would weave a dream net on a willow hoop. It would look just like a spider web but the net would be woven of twine. Then they stained it red with the juice from the berries. They believed that this would catch the bad dreams like almost like a spider web catches flies. Then the good dreams would drift through the hole in the center of the dream catcher. The parents always told the children to try to dream and try to remember what they dream. They did this because the believed that every dream had a meaning. If you had a bad dream it was though that something bad was going to happen to you or your family. If you had a good dream it was thought that something good was going to happen. I didn't really enjoy this book because it didn't really grab my attention. It had a good story and legend behind it but the way they explained it didn't interest me. I would recommend this book though if you want to find out the meaning behind a dream catcher. ~ Katelyn Carson

This is a story of a day in the life of the Ojibway Indians of the Great Lakes. The story is based on the baby of the tribe, whoses sister weaves a dreamcatcher. A dreamcatcher is a net, which is used to catch bad dreams, holding on to them until sunrise when they will be destroyed. This net was made for the Ojibway baby who watches its family through the day as they work and play, lulled into a restful slumber by the dreamatcher.
This is a wonderful story of how this tribe treasured their good dreams as a source of wisdom. It is very captivating for young readers to relate to dreams in this manner, also comparing the games that the children of this culture play. This poetic text uses a rhythm to keep the young reader interested. The beautiful pastel illustrations are used in an impressionistic way to keep the reader in that dream-like feelng.

My mom showed me this book when I was 5. When I was a baby somebody gave my mom a dreamcatcher and this book to protect me. My mom was reading a book about the Ojibway and we went to see a birchbark house and cradle board at our nature center. After that she said I bet you are old enough now to read about the dreamcatcher you have.

This is a good story. I'm glad somebody decided to help protect me when I sleep.

Fascinating glimpse into the life of a peddler!

Leonard Everett Fischer both wrote and illustrated this wonderful book, The Peddlers, which brings to life the world of hard work and supply shortages for the American colonists.

Lack of money and real career choices combined with a real need for simple everyday items like combs, sewing needles or buttons. No English law prohibited a young man from filling a sack with a number of necessities and traveling a bit to find his welcoming customers. The port of Boston would be swarming with people awaiting the arrival of a new ship and see what could be purchased and resold. Prices could go sky-high when the need for something was great and there was no other way to purchase it. A smart peddler could become very rich at this new trade, many eventually going into importing of goods.

Make no mistake, this was not easy money. Travel on the roads (or what passed for roads) was dangerous, physically challenging and would take the peddler away from home for long periods of time. Most of the traveling was done on foot. Buying a horse was out of the question for the most part, because the expense of it would take away from inventory that brought profit. Sometimes, the need was so great for goods that the first customer he met would buy his entire collection of goods!

Peddlers were often welcomed for the stories they could bring from outlying areas. A visit from a peddler was often the way news would travel. Leonard Everett Fischer brings the story of those men and their lively trade to life with this wonderful volume -- an asset to any student of colonial history.

Schroeder traces Chaplin's Dickensian childhood in turn-of-the-century London, his brilliant career as actor/writer/director, and his banishment during the McCarthy era. Chaplin's sex scandals and controversial political views receive nonjudgmental airings. While the author reveals little of his subject's inner life, it is obvious that the heartbreak and poverty of the Little Tramp's youth had a profound effect on both his personality and his artistic expression. The portrait's main strength lies in its depiction of Chaplin at work producing such silent-screen classics as The Gold Rush and City Lights; readers come away with a real sense of the artist's cinematic genius. Black-and-white photographs and motion-picture stills are scattered throughout. Chaplin's life gets some attention (including his unhappy childhood, his various stormy marriages, and his exile during the McCarthy period), but the focus is on his art and technique. From the early development of the Little Tramp character to the triumph of such critically acclaimed films as The Gold Rush and City Lights, Schroeder re-creates the classic scenes with loving detail. He shows how, for Chaplin, tragedy and humor were closely allied. There are quotes from Chaplin's autobiography ("Ridicule, I suppose, is an act of defiance"), lots of black-and-white photos from the various movies, and full chapter source notes. I think the book "Charlie Chaplin: The Beauty Of Silence," by Alan Schroeder, is a good book all around. It features his childhood, his begining in theater, and his overall success in the silent movie buisness. It gives and details some of Charlie's greatest films, such as "Gold Rush," "The Kid," "City Lights" and "Modern Times." It also records Charlie's downfall during the begining of the sound movies or "talkies."

The only unfortunate thing about the book is its generality. The book talks only about the most general things that happened during his life. The inner details of his life are left out. But, it is still a quality read if all you need are the bare facts.

Tim Brown is one of the greatest wide receivers to ever play in the National Football League. Notre Dame's Heisman Trophy winner in 1987, and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015, Tim played  sixteen seasons for the Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders, earning nine Pro Bowl selections and setting numerous team and league records. Its a good read. Not sure what the 2 star guy was expecting but Tim Brown really opens up and allows his fans inside really emotional personal memories, as well as his thoughts and beliefs on life to try to help others.

Short book, refers to video's which I was not aware should also be purchased. Designed for a group setting. Would not advice buying as a stand alone book. I was hoping for either more history of Tim Brown's journey and the application within the pages of this book.

see this online today and have to say that I find it very amusing that Tim authored this book, seeing as though he says that three of the marks of a "MAN" are being RESPONSIBLE, being a FATHER , and being a man who uses his SKILLS. Sir, please be responsible, be a father and use your skills to take care of ALL of your children. Please learn to be a "man" who has not constantly called on an elderly woman who has NO INCOME to take care of HIS responsibilities as a father time and time again to the tune of thousands of dollars. He and his wife are young and able-bodied adults please follow the example of the senior citizen you keep calling and work 2-3 jobs to raise your children also. Please be as concerned for her well being and how she plans to live the rest of her life as you are concerned about how you eat. Please call to say hello or happy birthday instead of just calling to ask for money. This "man" has to receive constant phone calls to repay his debt. This "man" chooses to fully provide for some of his children but not all of them. On the one hand, I say PLEASE buy this so he can stop taking advantage of my family and pay his debts but PLEASE do not believe the nonsense this man is selling.
