About the Author
Dr. Ronald Youngblood is a graduate of Valparaiso University (BA), Fuller Theological Seminary (BD), and the Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning (PhD). He has served as professor of Old Testament at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, Wheaton Graduate School, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and Bethel Seminary in San Diego, and is currently serving in the same capacity at International College and Graduate School in Honolulu. He is an associate editor of the NIV Study Bible; author of 1 and 2 Samuel in the Expositor's Bible Commentary series; and a co-translator and co-editor of the Holy Bible, New International Version. He has also edited and/or written ten other volumes, including Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary, for which he was awarded the Gold Medallion Book Award by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. He serves as chairman of the board of directors of International Bible Society and frequently engages in preaching and teaching ministries at home?
F.F. (Frederick Fyvie)Bruce was born in October the 12th, 1910, in Elgin (Scotland), to a Brethren Assemblies family. His father was an itinerant preacher for the Assemblies. F.F. was baptized and accepted as a member of his local congregation in September 1928. He remained loyal to his denomination for the rest of his life. “Through my own experience with the Brethren, I can say they are the ideal place where a lay theologian can serve the Church with his gifts” (Restrospect, p. 285).
As a lover of the Biblie and of the classical languages, when he was only 10 years old, he started simultaneous studies in Greek and Latin. F.F. was admitted to Aberdeen University in October 1928. He studied also in University of Cambridge (England, 1932-34) and in the University of Vienna (Austria, 1934-35), studying in preparation for his Graduation and Doctoral degree, excelling in both.
Bruce taught Greek in the Universities of Edinburgh (1935-38) and Leeds (1938-47). Afterwards, he taught Bible History and Literature in the University of Sheffield (1947-59) followed by Bible Criticism and Exegesis in the University of Manchester (1959-78).
He lectured in prestigious universities all around the world: Marburg (Germany), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Auckland (New Zealand), and Makerere (Uganda). He also lectured in numerous Theological Seminaries, among them the Calvin Seminary, in Grand Rapids (U.S.A.) and the Union Seminary, in New York City (U.S.A.).
He was voted President by the prestigious Societies of Old Testament Studies and New Testament Studies.
F.F. Bruce wrote some 50 books, plus several thousand articles, essays and reviews. His masterpiece The Acts of the Apostles: The Greek Text with Introduction and Commentary (1951) marked for the evangelical world the beginning of a new era in Bible study, being seriously considered by the Academia. In spite of never having made formal studies in Theology, he was an extraordinary reader of the subject and the Aberdeen University granted him in 1957 a Doctor Honoris Causa degree in Divinities.

Great Resource for Home Bible Studies

I love reading the Bible.
Even more than reading it - I love when I find that little treasure that expands it to life. Like the first time you go to the zoo and see how massive the elephants are or how the giraffes would be great at playing basketball if they had hands. That is how I feel when I look up a word in its original text like Hebrew or Greek, a whole new life opens up to me.
I was stoked when I got a chance to review the Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary: New and Enhanced Edition.
At first it looked like a huge book that would be nice to add to a shelf for decoration, which will also be an asset. But, then we opened it.
I love that it is full color! Full of wonderful photographs that even the kids will be excited to look up a word or a place out of their Bible lessons. Who doesn't like seeing photographs of things that were pertinent to what you are studying? It makes it come alive! I did see a review that mentioned some nudity. I would highly suggest looking at the dictionary beside your children - I didn't see any photos that were provoking (I could have missed them) but each family is different and have to make decisions based on their own convictions.
If one has never studied the Bible before, it gives you an easy plan called Five Easy Better Bible Study Steps using the Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary. This would be great for those high school students who might need another way to learn.
Then there is the maps. Gorgeous! Full of color and great for researching Biblical times.
I use maps every time we study something new or need to go over where something happened in the Bible. It just makes sense to show the students or myself when and where a story took place.
Overall, I would highly recommend this Great Resource for Home Bible Studies.

Very helpful

As a visual learner, I appreciate the many pictures, charts and maps on this Bible dictionary. There are so many illustrations here that can help readers get a better grasp of the history, timeline, as well as differences between the concepts being explained.
I love that they included 5 Easy Steps to Better Bible Study using Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary. I admit at first I just read the passages then referred to the Bible dictionary when there are terms or words I want to check. But the 5 steps definitely helped me learn how I can use this Bible dictionary in my everyday reading so I can understand the Bible verses on a deeper level. For the entries of each book of the Bible, you will find a helpful study and teaching outline which helps you organize each book according to theme or event.
But what I loved the most about this Bible dictionary are the first few pages where they presented a Visual Survey of the Bible from the Old to the New Testament. There’s also a History of the World and a History of Israel (the People, the Land, the Kingdom, the Remnant). It also shows charts on the Poetic Books, the Prophetic Books, the Life of Christ, History of the Early Church, Writings of the Early Church, and Themes of the New Testament Letters.
This is only a Bible dictionary and not a commentary, so not all entries are discussed in depth. I still think it’ll be nice to have a Bible commentary in addition to a Bible dictionary. But this will do for now since I’m only just really doing weekly devotions with a small group at church, and if a difficult question is raised, I can always park that question and consult our Pastor so he can answer in detail.
All in all, I think this is a good Bible dictionary. This is going to be especially helpful for me as I go through our church’s School of Leadership where we discuss doctrinal truths. I can use this to complement our discussions in class, and I’ll have something to refer to or check should I want more information.
