This book fills the reader with hope for a world in turmoil. A world filled with hate and rest. It leaves you with the feeling that yes God is in charge and always has been. But how his heart must ache for the way his children are living. I chose this book because I love ,Billy Graham and have a great deal of respect for a man that has done such wonderful work here on earth for our dear Lord. God Bless and keep you always.

Billy Graham’s newest inspirational booklet, THE CRADLE, CROSS, AND CROWN, arrives just in time for your Christmas celebration. This collection of poems, devotional writings, Scriptures and lyrics of Christmas carols is a wonderful instrument to aid us in preparing our hearts for the Advent season. As Graham reminds us, there’s more to the message of Christmas than what we see in stores, Christmas trees and the presents under them each year. It’s really the threefold message of the baby born in the manger who went to the cross for our sins and will return one day triumphant as the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Every December, a local radio station begins playing Christmas carols back-to-back. In Christmas songs and hymns both old and new, the truths of the Bible resound in our hearts. They fill us with longing for God’s presence in our lives and our homes, as well as the utter joy of the way God began to fulfill His promises at the stable in Bethlehem; the cost of the price Jesus paid on the cross; and all that we have to look forward to in His coming. Graham well understands the power of these carols, and you’ll find some of their lyrics interwoven throughout this devotional.

In the booklet’s first section, “The Cradle,” you’ll find morsels on which to meditate that are centered on Jesus’ birth. Readings by Graham, poems from his wife, Ruth Bell Graham, and others’ writings give us pause to stop and think about the many aspects of a Savior who was born in Bethlehem, and the varied perspectives of those who witnessed the birth. Scripture and carols calm our hearts and spirits, and remind us to rejoice at the birth of the promised Christ.

In section two, “The Cross,” Graham carries us to what Jesus’ disciples initially feared was the final chapter of the Son of David, His death on a cross. How wrong they were! For first-century Jews who were looking to throw off the yoke of Rome, the Messiah looked very different from what they were expecting. Yet in all Jesus did, there was fulfillment of both Scripture and the words of the angel: “He shall save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) Jesus knew the purpose for which He had come, and He expresses this repeatedly in the Gospels, in both word and deed. In “The Cross” we’re reminded again and again of our need for a Savior, and how Jesus met all these needs in ways we’d never be able to ourselves. Scripture, devotional writings and hymn lyrics underscore these again, as well as our own need for a response to God’s Savior.

The last section, “The Crown,” points us toward the future. As Handel’s Messiah and the Scripture from which it’s taken remind us, there is a day coming when “He shall reign forever and ever. Hallelujah!” Scripture promises us, and Graham reminds us, that we can have hope that a wonderful country awaits us, with a just and righteous King. The baby born in a manger, who gave up His life for us on the cross, will return someday as that King of kings and Lord of lords. In the meantime, we can choose all that we do --- to follow Him, to love Him, to receive Him as our Lord and Savior. And to “fear not,” because God is good and Jesus is coming.

THE MILITARY HISTORY OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR NAVAL BATTLES

The Revolutionary War was the war that gave birth to America. Our founding fathers came together to defeat the British and free the colonies from the king. As well as battles on land, there were battles at sea that had just as much to do with the war. This book tells about these battles. I liked this book because it describes the battles very well.

This book told how the battles were conducted, which was very good. It told how the ships would sail so they could shoot at each other, which is parallel to each other. It also told who won each battle and the admirals in charge. And it told the result of each battle, and, if any, the battles it led to.

The fact that it described the ships was excellent. It told what the descriptions meant for the people who didn't know. It described them by what kind of boat it was and how many guns it had. And it told how many people were on the ships.

It also told some about the battles at land which helped to tell where in the war the events are happening at. It helps sort out what's happening and how close to the end of the war it is. It also lets you not just keep hearing about ships, and giving you a little diversity. It makes it so you can keep reading the book without hearing the same things over and over again.

This book was extremely great. Trevor Nevitt Dupuy and Grace Person Hayes told the Revolutionary War very well. This is a great depiction of the naval battles in the American Revolution.

An Awesome Guide to THE BOOK.

This Handbook is not only informative but also a reverent guide to HIS WORD. There are many devotionals for each and every book and like a prism, reflects many aspects of HIS WORD that even a devout student has probably not considered. For example, "Christ in the Grave Three Days and Three Nights" (p. 467) gives an interesting and reasoned suggestion for Christ having been crucified on Thursday -- supporting Christ's own words in a literal and exact prediction as opposed to simply omitting the 3 nights portion of the prediction when trying to uderstand the Crucifixion/Resurrection timetable. The introduction of this Handbook is titled "The Bible Palace" and approaches Our Father's Love Letter (the Holy Bible) with a delectable sample of its enticing morsels: "It is the Word of the living God and is (1) Indestructible (Matt 24:35); (2) Incorruptible (1 Pet 1:24-25); (3) Indispensable (Deut 8:3; Matt 4:4; Job 23:12); (4) Infallible (Matt 5:18); (5) Inexhaustible (Psalm 92:5) . . . God thought it, Christ wrought it, the Holy Spirit brought it, the devil fought it, but I got it." And I would recommend any student, lover of the Word, or honest seeker buy this book -- you won't be able to resist jumping in and swimming in this delicious, nourishing Milk of the Word. This is one of those books which is truly a bargain, especially since it reveals many not-so-obvious gems contained within the Pearl Beyond Price!

I've taught the Word of God for over thirty years, and have a large library with hundreds of books. I say this only to qualify the statement made in the title. If one was to own only one Bible handbook with which to study and teach the Scriptures, this is it.

From archaeology, to science, to seed thoughts for sermons, to customs, to statistics, to hundreds of outlines--this handbook is as inexhaustible as it is indispensable. It is so voluminous, it has several separate indexes (which sometimes are a bit confusing).

For any minister or teacher who wants many encyclopedia's worth of reference material in one single book, this is the book to beg for, borrow, or steal. Formally entitled "Boyd's Bible Handbook", this work will give the reader a lifetime of useful material--always--always--being careful to exalt Christ in all the Bible. (I spent 3 hours on just 'prayer' alone!)

The book is thoroughly researched (as of 1980), and references are fully cited. In short, this work is a masterpiece. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Really great family fun

This map is 32" tall and 51" wide, displays timezones, parks and roads, and has very vibrant colors. Other reviewers mentioned the paper was too thin, but for the cost and size of the map I think it's fine. I would compare it to butcher paper.

To frame a map this large would have been expensive, so I went to my local craft store and bought (2) 38x40 (the largest size I could find) 3/16" thick adhesive-backed white foam boards. Starting in the left-hand corner, I attached the map to the first foam board, and then cut the second foam board to fit the last 11" of the map. If you match the 2 foam board pieces up tightly, you won't be able to see the seam when you hang the map. A piece of masking tape on the backside helps too.

Instead of nails I used (6) 3M adhesive tabs to hang it. You can usually find these in any picture frame/hook aisle. I hung it in a high-traffic hallway upstairs. I am amazed at how long my kids stay and study it.

The 3/16" foam board is also great because it provides the cushion needed to add push-pins. Everyone in our household has their own colored push-pin and we've marked each location we have visited. If all 4 of us went on a family trip, that's also a different color push pin. (It's a good idea to make a key in the left hand corner of the map so you remember who's color is who's.)

Better than I expected!

[[VIDEOID:mo3SZHCD3SETNQD]]My package arrived in 2 days (Prime) in a long, 4"x4"x36" box. The map itself was rolled in a plastic sleeve and there was a modest amount of packing material in the box to keep the map from shifting around. My map was in perfect condition when I removed it from the shipping box. Kudos to the shippers at Amazon.

The map has a glossy finish but it is not stiff. I guess when people read it is laminated, they associate that with laminated ID cards which are hard plastic. This is best described as paper with a waterproof coating on it. I was not concerned about the coating as we plan to frame this and put it on the wall in our spare bedroom and use pins to mark all the places we travel to.

This map is absolutely beautiful and looks awesome framed and mounted. It shows many cities and towns in every state, it also show rivers and relief. It identifies the major mountain ranges, shows most (if not all) National Parks, National Recreation Areas, National Monuments, mountains with their elevation, and much more. I can't express enough at how great this map looks and it was only $10.xx! We've traveled to most of the US and are embarking on a 22 state trip during the summer of 2014 and we found out a pack of 100 map pins is not nearly enough.

In summary, you will be very happy with this map. And we will try to remember to come back here and post a picture or video of it once we get it up on the wall. If not, it will be on our web site.

UPDATE: I added a short video showing the map framed and mounted on the wall. We still have to add pins for 20 more states!

Great map for older kids

I purchased this and the "World Map" together from Amazon, since they are made by the same company on the same material, much of my review will be the same:

I was hunting for maps large enough for a 6 and 10 year old to look at and comprehend, but cheap enough to be replaced once things change or the kids did too much damage to it.

The positives - this map is correct, it's large (we tacked them up in the hallway to the kids' rooms) and it's very colorful, which is good for 6 year olds. It has time zones, capitals, waterways, and mountain ranges all clearly marked

The negatives - it's not laminated, now if I was buying this for myself that would be fine, but the paper is also some strange form of paper that attracts and holds small sticky fingerprints. Being maps, little fingers are naturally attracted like magnets.

If you are making the purchase for an adult or a classroom, or if you intend to frame it, then I highly recommend this map. If you are buying for little ones, I'd spend the extra money to get a laminated version.

One last note - if you purchase from Amazon, they are not particularly well packed. They put them in a tube that is too large for the map so it bangs around and the ends get a bit bent up. Also they don't tape the ends of the tube so I had to have a second one sent after my first tube arrived empty and without ends on it. (It was actually the world map that was missing from the tube, but this one was packed in the same manner)

It appears that they are unable to focus their eyes on the object mentioned in the text. The illustrations are accompanied by dull, repetitious sentences: "See the. . ." and "Look at the. . . ." Also, it's disturbing to find young children directed to "See the sun." The book does offer an adult appendix with a diagram of the eye and a technical explanation of how the eye works. Preschool Teacher Must Have!

There are just enough words on a page to get the message accross without your pre-schoolers losing interest. At the end of the book there is a nice diagram of the parts of the eye and brief discriptions of their functions. A must have. I am looking forward to owning the rest of the series on the senses.

Engaging pictures and text for little ones

I used this series of books with a daycare class. The kids loved them. The pictures are engaging, and the text is a fun way to introduce children to the senses. Each book contains further pictures and explanations about the mechanics of the body, i.e. the nose, ears, tongue, which are great for children who are still curious when the book is done.

overly basic

UPDATE: it seems as though the map I bought and reviewed may have been replaced by another map which splits the country into two (East on one side and West on the other), and without the two smaller Mileages and Physical maps. I don't know if the new map has better detail. My review is for the older one with the Statue Of Liberty on the cover, that I bough here on amazon in 2010.

This map is small-ish in size for a US Interstate map. It's durably laminated and easy to fold. This map is comprised of 3 sections:

-the main map which shows the interstate and major highways of the U.S.
-the Mileages & Driving Times map
-the United States Physical Map

The big problem: the main map is not very detailed in the number of cities or roads shown. Surprising, since I've found other Rand McNally maps to be decent or even good in this regard. I'd rather that the main map were given much more space (even if it required using both sides), and the less-important Mileages and Physical maps less space, or combine all three into one large juicy map. The state boundaries are shown in white lines and are difficult to discern - it would be useful to have each state shown in a different color. The Unites States Physical Map on the back side is visually pretty, but is sparsely detailed. A bit of additional information is included like 22 points of interest and toll road prices.

This map might be useful for planning the overall route of a long trip across several states, but not much else. You'll still need more detailed state or city maps for actually navigating while driving. As an alternative, the laminated Streetwise USA Road Map is smaller in size, and similarly limited in detail as this one. However, the soft-laminated USA Interstate Map by Borch is much larger, richly detailed, and about the same price as either.

One detail overlooked...

This is a sturdy map with a nice plastic laminate on it. It folds into a travel size. But, I did not know the map was split in half with one half on the front and the other on the back. I wanted and expected the full map on one side.

two sided map

I was hoping it was all on one side of the page. I will be traveling through the middle states and wanted to figure out my route. I hate filping it over to see the other side!
