Grade 7-10-A critical look at Jackson that traces his rise to military and political power and emphasizes his willingness to use force and domination to achieve his goals. Meltzer discusses his subject's presidency in some detail, describing his policies and their effects on the country. However, he fails to convey why the man has been so well regarded by historians and why he was important to the building of our nation. While Jackson's Indian removal policy and protection of slavery cannot and should not be defended, and his dismantling of the Bank of the United States was ill advised, he also had a positive impact on the country. Meltzer does not give him enough credit for his resolute defense of the Union during the nullification crisis, and fails to mention how his nationalism and his popularity with the average Americans who were just starting to take part in the political process was an important part in the building of a more cohesive country. As usual, Meltzer writes well, and this book is interesting and easy to understand. Well-chosen black-and-white illustrations, maps, and drawings add to the text.

Gr. 8-12. Meltzer's biographies always teach us as much about the history of the period as they do about his subject. His latest book is no exception. Readers will emerge with a multifaceted picture of Andrew Jackson--a wily land speculator but poor businessman, a politician who fought to preserve the Union but subverted the law when convenient, a gambler who loved horse racing, a doting husband, and a proponent of slavery. They will also come away with the understanding that Jackson was very much a product of his time and that he was willing to represent the people against the "rapacious moneyed aristocracy" as long as it suited his interests. Thoroughly covered are Jackson's role in and the conditions that led to such historic events as the Indian removal and the abolitionist movement, with Meltzer selecting and presenting all his information in a manner that is thoughtful, provocative, and very readable. Student researchers will appreciate Meltzer's source notes as well as his suggestions of other topics to explore. Chris Sherman

A scathing portrayal of the man who presided over an era when slavery became more deeply entrenched, Native-Americans were hounded from their eastern homelands, and US citizens flooded Texas in anticipation of its annexation. The dueling pistols featured on the jacket, along with the chapter headings, underline Meltzer's theme: the feisty orphan, quick to defend his honor against any offense, matured to become an autocrat who won power via a charismatic personality and such happenstance as being proclaimed hero of the Battle of New Orleans through no particular merit. As he did in Columbus (1990) and Thomas Jefferson (1991), Meltzer points out the ongoing significance of events and builds his central portrait with a wealth of vivid, concrete detail; but though he also sees slaveholder and Indian- fighter Jackson as a product of his times, he has virtually no sympathy for him: from appointing Roger Taney (of Dred Scott notoriety) to the Supreme Court to his role in the demise of the Second Bank of the United States, Meltzer depicts Jackson as a propagandist who posed as the workingman's friend while consistently, and often illegally, undermining his interests. No specific citations for quotes, but the author provides an excellent essay on his sources and a good selection of maps and period art, posters, etc. (though some of the cartoons are too small and dark to read). Hailed as the "greatest man of the age" by admirers and attacked as "King Andrew the First" by critics, Jackson dramatically expanded the presidency's powers and dominated American politics for two decades. After defeating the British at the Battle of New Orleans and conquering the Creek Indians, Major General Jackson became a national hero. Jackson soon organized what became the modern Democratic Party to become President, vigorously ruled as President, and wiped out the Federal debt. Synthesizing conflicting perspectives on this charismatic populist leader, this well-written book also examines promotion of slavery, the forced relocation of Indians against a Supreme Court decision, and expansionist policies. Excellent annotated source notes for people interested in further pursuing this fascinating era in American history.

For example, "Interestingly enough, an airhead and a blockhead, though seemingly antonyms because one is empty and one is filled, essentially mean the same thing. Even an airhead might understand that!" The layout is pleasing to the eye and makes for easy reading. Quotations from famous people demonstrate the uses of some words. Students will learn much from this book that features nearly 400 words, their definitions, and their histories. Yet, each word's origin is not told in a boring fashion. Instead, the lively way that each word's story is related, including some humorous sentences to remember some definitions or origins, provides a fun way for students to learn these words. The vivid photographs also help to make the book a good way to interest students in learning words. This is a highly recommended resource!

Such a cool book!

This is a brilliant book - funny, clear, interesting. It's packed with the history of time and physics, and explains quantum physics in a way anybody can understand. The inner workings of a black hole, what a wormhole is, and time travel paradoxes are all explained. The illustrations are great (and often very funny).I'd definitely recommend it for adults as well as children.

Albert Einstein once said that, if you can't explain a theory to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.
I love this book it is humorous, condense, and easy to understand. If given a chances I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in exploring the concept of time and to
folks, like myself, who wouldn't want to spent hours reading boring old scientific journal.

Biographers have always found Henry VIII a controversial, albeit endlessly intriguing, character. This work, which is a radical departure from existing treatments in that it suggests that Henry was easily and often manipulated by those about him, will add to that controversy. Unfortunately, Starkey produces precious little in the way of new evidence to support his thesis (there are no footnotes and his bibliography is scant), and if his work has any real value it will be as a stimulus to debate. J.J. Scarisbrick's Henry VIII (1968), Lacey Baldwin Smith's Henry VIII: the mask of royalty (1971), and G.R. Although...billed as a biography for children, even adults will find the book offers a new perspective on the artist (and) may learn some trivia about "America's best-loved illustrator"... As popular as his art was, he battled throughout this long career with low self-esteem...Students will identify with the boy who was unathletic, painfully shy...(yet later) reached out to everyone in town to model for him. (Former models describe the fun he had with them in the studio.)

Rockwell's life story is described in a simple, straightforward manner. Photographs of the artist and his family, along with full-color reproductions of his most famous works show young readers the "Rockwell style" from his early Saturday Evening Post covers to his final works on civil rights themes.

This book is GREAT!

My husband bought this book for us this past spring. My children, who are almost 2 and almost 4, both love this book. I am glad to have found a book that encourages the values that I am trying to teach them, such as honesty, being helpful to others, and other similar values. I recomend this book to anyone who has children, young or older.

Delightful book!

I loved this book for my son when he was little. It teaches positive, Christian principles without being preachy, and it is a good alternative to traditional nursery rhymes, which don't really teach much of anything at all.
